#METTOP again pushed boundaries–this time in the field of #E-Waste recycling In the realm of sustainable metal recovery, innovation meets expertise—and the results can be truly transformative. This was exemplified by the success achieved by our copper specialists, Dr. Andreas Filzwieser and Dr. Christoph Sagadin, at a client's site recently. The client had been grappling with a challenge: their innovative process for recovering valuable metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electronic waste was not running smoothly as the quality of the recovered metal phase was very low. 😟 Expertise in Action In a brief period on site  the slag chemistry was changed and the situation was turned around. Through METTOP´s experts profound technical knowledge and targeted interventions, they collaborated closely with the client’s smelting team to optimize processes. 🤝 The result? A raw copper was produced which can be further treated directly in an electrolytical refining cell without any additional steps. 😃 This breakthrough was made possible by changing the slag chemistry, which not only maximizes the recovery of the precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum group metals (#PGMs) but also allows to extracts metals like tin and antimony. 📈 A Milestone for Sustainable Metal Recovery This achievement underscores the power of collaboration and expertise in addressing critical challenges in the circular economy. UrbanGold by METTOP at ECO-MOBILITY 2024: Advancing sustainable e-mobility through innovative e-motor technologies 🚘 The ECO-MOBILITY 2024 Conference, hosted by the A3PS - Austrian Association for Advanced Propulsion Systems at the historic Palais #Pálffy in Vienna provided a vital platform for discussing the future of green propulsion systems. Among the diverse participants was UrbanGold by METTOP, represented by Project Manager Alejandro Robles Martin, who contributed to the sustainability dialogue. Alejandro presented METTOP’s partner research project on a critical challenge in e-mobility: the circularity of e-motors. ♻️ How we contribute to #sustainability and #recycling: 🌱 METTOP’s presentation, addressed the pressing issue of material losses in current vehicle recycling practices. Alejandro focused on developing sustainable end-of-life scenario for e-motors, which target the recovery of rare earths. The recycling challenge: A focus on permanent magnets ♻️ 🧲 Currently, e-motors are shredded along with the car body at the end of a vehicle’s life cycle. This process leads to the complete loss of #permanent #magnets, which are crucial for e-motor functionality, as they are eventually diluted into the steelmaking process. This prevalent end-of-life scenario poses a significant challenge for material sustainability, given the reliance on rare earth elements in magnet production. METTOP’s initiative in partnership with the Politecnico di Torino in the #EM-TECH project proposes an alternative approach to recycling e-motors, designed to preserve the valuable materials embedded in permanent magnets. By rethinking e-motor design and exploring innovative disassembly and recovery methods, this project concept aims to minimize material loss, reduce reliance on raw material extraction, and support circular economy principles in e-mobility. ECO-MOBILITY 2024 provided an ideal setting for our Project Manager Alejandro to share these findings and engage with industry leaders, policymakers, and academic researchers. The presentation sparked meaningful discussions on the future of e-motor recycling, drawing interest from participants keen to address the inefficiencies of current recycling practices. When #heat is generated as a #by-product in a production process, it is of natural interest not to let this heat go to waste, but to use it efficiently. However, when water is used for cooling, the limits of economic utilization are quickly reached at temperatures of a water temperature of 60°C and above. #ILTEC Technology changes the game by extending this cooling fluid temperature limit up to 200°C.
