Taste the science! 🎇 Two of our project partners AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and Sensatec GmbH recently presented exciting progress on our project at the 26th Symposium – Strategies for Soil and Groundwater Remediation 2024 #DECHEMA 👉 https://lnkd.in/dfsrk9qj Their presentation looked into "Microbial Cyanide Degradation in Groundwater of #Contaminated Sites – Optimization of Bacterial Cultures and Development of Tools." This research explores using bacteria to clean up #cyanide #contamination in groundwater, focusing on both improving the effectiveness of these bacteria and developing new tools for the process. CARBONAS: CO2 footprint for soil remediation and other soil related works   CARBONAS (Carbon Assessment of Soil related works, version 2.0, 2024) is a calculation model developed by TAUW to determine the carbon footprint of soil & groundwater remediation and other soil related works. This footprint is one of the most important indicators of the environmental impact of proposed soil remediation works, necessary for a comprehensive assessment of alternatives and for quantification in environmental reports (think of CSRD). CARBONAS takes into account transport, soil processing, off site soil treatment, groundwater purification, drilling techniques, piping materials, sheet piling, (chemical) additives, in situ techniques and chemical and biological processes.   The tool is used by TAUW-consultants in projects, but can also be purchased by external parties (frequent users) by license. Heute ist Weltbodentag! 🌱 Zu diesem Anlass, möchten wir erfolgreiches Horizon Europe Projekt unter österreichischer Koordination vorstellen: MIBIREM. Eine Tankstelle schließt und was bleibt zurück? Ein kontaminierter Boden. Eine Sanierung ist da meist technisch schwierig, dauert lang und kostet viel. Doch es gibt unscheinbare, aber sehr aktive Helfer: Mikroorganismen wie Bakterien oder Pilze. Sie produzieren Enzyme, die Schadstoffe im Boden oder im Grundwasser abbauen können. Bioremediation wird dieser Prozess genannt, und mit ihm könnten etwa mit Öl belastete Böden bald wesentlich einfacher und billiger wieder sauber werden. Das europäische Forschungsprojekt MIBIREM arbeitet unter Koordination der österreichischen RTDS Group daran, dieses Verfahren künftig für viele Sanierungsfälle anwendbar zu machen.
