@PSI and NOA: Cooperation. There have been over the years many research projects to read out magnetic information from tapes. The way how @PSI approaches it is a truly interesting and ground breaking approach which must be backed by direct experience from the field. In the light of „degralescence“ and disappearing magnetic head manufacturers, the archive world has the duty to look for alternative ways to extract time based information. This will lead the path and the way to new technologies not only related to audio signals but possibly any kind of magnetic signals stored on tapes. NOA‘s pHDetox project about acetate tape rejuvenation is now some years history. There never have been any results published. Contributing NOA‘s internal IP to the Play It Again project might help AV archives to read from a central database which will help build knowledge at PSI over the next years that is useful to archives and applicable in practice. The dedication of the team around Sebastian Gliga, that includes Jack Harrison, @Dominik Blatter and @Lars Heller, who bring things forward in such a stunning environment like the PSI - SLS, is truly inspiring and must be supported.

𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗥𝗙 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗢𝗔’𝘀 𝗙𝗜𝗔𝗧/𝗜𝗙𝗧𝗔 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗡𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟲𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗜𝗠𝗫 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 The ORF DiMi project, powered by NOA’s 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗟𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 for QC-controlled video ingest and the 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝗗𝗕 workflow orchestration system, has been nominated for the 2024 FIAT/IFTA award in "Excellence in Media Preservation". This recognition is even more meaningful as it follows the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage yesterday – a day dedicated to celebrating and safeguarding the world’s audiovisual legacy. This nomination underscores the importance of projects like DiMi in preserving invaluable media history for future generations. The DiMi (DigitalMigration) project, set to conclude in 2025, has already migrated around 550,000 Digibeta and IMX cassettes, aiming to preserve this substantial part of Austria's invaluable media heritage. Here’s how our approach has ensured lasting success for this project well into the future: • 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝗖 monitors RF and ISR data to prevent new errors due to tape head contact. • 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝗖 ensures error-free MXF wrappers for final export. • 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗤𝗖 checks if original recordings (Umatic, 1”, 2”) offer better quality than their secondary Digibeta/IMX migrations. • 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗤𝗖 supports processing of 200-400 cassettes daily across two sites, tracking all ingest and cleaning steps by operator and location. • 𝗨𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗤𝗖 protects data integrity with checksum comparisons to avoid bit loss during final storage. • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗤𝗖 verifies the digital archive in the FESAD repository. • 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 clears physical storage by disposing of up to three generations of tapes – not only Digibeta/IMX but also their original sources. • 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 by emptying climate-controlled storage floors, freeing up valuable property space. Operated by the international IT service provider Atos in its new role as a digitization service provider in this field, their quick adoption of the NOA workbench facilitated a steep but smooth learning curve and successful implementation in their first media digitization project. Finally, we warmly congratulate Yousuf Jan Nesar and the INA team for winning the FIAT/IFTA award in "Excellence in Media Preservation", the same category in which we were nominated alongside Atos and ORF. Their project sets a high standard in dedication and expertise for audiovisual heritage preservation - a mission we at NOA deeply respect and support. Being recognized alongside such an exceptional, award-winning effort is an honor, underscoring our shared commitment within the preservation community. This recognition drives us at NOA to continue advancing our technology, ensuring media assets remain accessible and protected for future generations.
