Death steals the life of the deceased, but also parts of the lives of ones close to the deceased. Like you try to derive something, but cannot remember or refer to something important anymore. You want to ask or communicate something, but there is no address to send the question or communication to. You try to move something, but the limb is not there. Yet, on the positive side, we as humans tend to be good at repairing the systems, and try to keep the storyline and memories alive, among others, by recording and sharing them. We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Dieter Fensel, co-founder of Onlim, visionary leader, and a pioneer in the field of semantic technology. Dieter passed away on December 29, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy as a dedicated university professor, a trailblazing scientist in Semantic Web research, and a valued mentor and friend to so many of us. As the co-founder of Onlim, Dieter not only helped shape our company but also significantly influenced the future of conversational AI with his groundbreaking ideas and insights. His brilliance and passion for innovation were always evident in our discussions—though his ideas were often ahead of their time, they challenged and inspired us in profound ways. The research we conducted together in numerous international projects led to the founding of two successful startups (Onlim and Seekda) and the establishment of the Semantic Technology Institute International (STI2)—a global network that brought together world-class researchers, companies, and organizations dedicated to advancing Semantic Web technology. Dieter knew how to balance hard work with moments of joy, often creating unforgettable memories with his enthusiasm for celebrations, dinners, and lively conversations. To honor his visionary contributions, we are sharing an image of Dieter from a video we created 15 years ago about the future of the internet—a vision that, in many ways, has become reality. On behalf of the entire Onlim team, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dieter’s family, friends, and colleagues. His vision, dedication, and passion will continue to inspire us as we carry forward his legacy. Rest in peace, Dieter. You will be profoundly missed, but your impact will remain timeless.
