We were honored to participate in the 1st International Symposium for the Conservation of Sea Turtles in the Red Sea, hosted by the General Organization for Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea - shams . This landmark event brought together an international network of experts, researchers, and conservation leaders under the theme “Navigating the Future: Advancing Sea Turtle Conservation in the Red Sea through Science, Collaboration, and Innovation.” The symposium focused on essential objectives, including: - Reviewing the current state of knowledge on Red Sea turtle populations and their habitats - Identifying region-specific strengths, threats, and challenges in marine conservation - Introducing and connecting leading experts, researchers, policymakers, and conservation practitioners - Establishing enduring networks for collaborative research and conservation initiatives - Exploring innovative approaches and emerging technologies to address pressing conservation challenges RED SEA PROJECT™ was proud to contribute to this critical dialogue. Our Scientific Advisor, Dr. Omar Attum from Indiana University Southeast, and our Director, Ahmed Fouad, presented recent findings and upcoming initiatives that reinforce our commitment to marine biodiversity and the resilience of the Red Sea ecosystem. This forum offered an invaluable opportunity to advance science-driven strategies and foster cross-sector partnerships essential to securing a sustainable future for sea turtles and other key marine species. We extend our sincere gratitude to SHAMS and all participating organizations for their gracious invitation and dedication to impactful conservation efforts. We look forward to continued collaboration and knowledge exchange, all focused on nurturing sustainable marine ecosystems in the Red Sea region.

We are delighted to have been invited to present the RED SEA TURTLES PROJECT™ PADI Distinctive Specialty Course at the PADI Members Forum - Egypt, October 2024. This incredible gathering in Marsa Alam and Hurghada brought together PADI professional divers to receive updates on the 2023 Year in Review, regional news, the Open Water Diver Survey, and continuing education programs, led by PADI Regional Manager Ahmed Sayed. We were thrilled to present on the Cetaceans of the Red Sea to 50 students from College De La Mere De Dieu - Alexandrie during the Environmental Awareness Day hosted by Red Sea Diving Safari at Marsa Nakari Village . The workshop provided a comprehensive exploration of the regular and rare dolphin and whale species in the Red Sea, including their biology, distribution, and conservation status. We also reviewed the code of conduct and best practices to ensure that dive and snorkeling tours with dolphins are conducted in a safe and responsible manner. Our heartfelt thanks go to all participants for their active engagement and to Marsa Nakari Ecolodge for their invitation and exceptional support in advancing environmental education among the younger generation. We recently had the pleasure of hosting 35 bright young minds from Abu Ghosoun Village for an exciting two-day journey in our Eco-School program. On the first day, we spent a wonderful time at Qula'an Beach, where the children learned about the vibrant marine ecosystems and fascinating megafauna of the Red Sea. Our talented volunteers from the Lycée Français du Caire's 101 initiative designed and led a variety of educational games that made learning fun and engaging. The second day was spent at our newly developed facility, where the children had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities. They learned how to use microscopes to inspect microorganisms like plankton, sparking curiosity and wonder about the tiny creatures that play such a big role in our oceans—and much more. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the park rangers of Wadi El Gimal National Park—Mr. Mahgoub, Mrs. Nasra, and Dr. Ayman—for their invaluable support in making this program a success. A special shoutout to the 101 Team, Mrs. Marine, and Mr. Abou for their continuous dedication and involvement in our educational efforts. Together, we are nurturing the future stewards of our environment!

We are thrilled to announce that Ahmed Fouad, Director of RED SEA PROJECT™, has been honored with the Ocean Torchbearer Award by the PADI AWARE Foundation and published in the 3rd Quarter 2024 issue of the Undersea Journal Magazine. As a dedicated dive professional and ocean advocate, Fouad is passionate about promoting conservation within local communities and among divers visiting the Red Sea. His RED SEA PROJECT™ has become a catalyst for positive change in this incredible ecosystem through a combination of research, citizen science, and community engagement. In 2022, the PADI AWARE Foundation® partnered with the RED SEA PROJECT™ to encourage divers and snorkelers worldwide to monitor marine turtles. This collaboration, supported by the PADI AWARE community grant, has led to significant achievements: over 4,000 divers from 45 PADI and non-PADI dive centers participated, and 30 PADI Instructors completed a distinctive specialty course on turtles, enhancing their skills and knowledge. With the support of the PADI AWARE community grant, we conducted 437 snorkeling surveys and 162 scuba diving surveys in turtle feeding grounds. Through these efforts, we identified and tracked 180 marine turtles, documenting 5,576 turtle encounters, all meticulously uploaded to our database. Currently, we are processing these reports, with data analysis reaching 47.5 percent. The increase in both the size and quality of the data collected has allowed our researchers to conduct more in-depth analyses of the local turtle population. This data, when correlated with environmental information, promises to provide a clearer understanding of the factors influencing turtle behaviors. By integrating PADI AWARE educational materials and programs into almost all our activities—from coral health assessments to Dive Against Debris®—we aim to collaborate closely with PADI AWARE and PADI to protect our oceans.
