The Research Center for Pharmaceutical Engineering (RCPE) is a global leader in pharmaceutical engineering sciences. We help our partners to create and manufacture advanced medicines for patients around the world, through optimising products and processes. 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦! This week, meet Nick Morse, one of the inspiring minds shaping our success! "Originally from the United States, I completed my Ph.D. focused on computational fluid dynamics in 2023 at the University of Minnesota. I was drawn to study fluid dynamics due to the fascinating depth of physics present in fluid flows, and I'm particularly passionate about the magic of recreating these complex phenomena on a computer through simple lines of code. Computational fluid dynamics is an engaging and ever-evolving area of science: it combines physics, mathematics, numerical methods, and computer science in a quest to reveal insights about the natural world. Progress in the field has only accelerated with the advancement of computer hardware: simulations previously deemed infeasible are now attainable on modern supercomputers, while computations once relegated to a such supercomputers can now be performed on a desktop computer. In my own work, I'm most proud to have derived a coordinate system that revealed new insights into simulations of curved axisymmetric turbulent boundary layers, inspiring other researchers to apply this perspective to study their own flow configurations. At RCPE, I'm working on the challenge of creating a multi-scale simulation framework to predict nanoparticle qualities as part of the PHOENIX OITB, a project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. My work on this project has ranged from performing high-fidelity simulations of the mixing flow fields in nanoparticle production devices to developing an in-house code to accurately resolve the deformation and breakup of nanodroplets. Looking to the future, I hope to further develop my scientific and computational skillset to help advance the state of the art in the understanding of complex fluid dynamics." Glad to see our AUTOMATED ELECTROCHEMICAL FLOW PLATFORM out in Angewandte Chemie: https://shorturl.at/nMQL8. While automated batch and flow reactors are established for high throughput experimentation in the context of thermal chemistry and photochemistry, the development of electrochemical platforms can be problematic because of cell miniaturization challenges in batch and difficulties in designing effective single-pass flow systems. In collaboration with Merck Healthcare, we have designed and implemented a new, slug-based automated electrochemical flow platform. This platform was successfully used in the synthesis of a library of Proteolysis targeting chimeras (PROTACs) analogs (44 examples). Furthermore a Design of Experiments (DoE) optimization for an unsuccessful library target was performed in an automated way by the platform, resulting in a 5-fold increase in reaction yield. Another fruitful collaboration between Merck Healthcare, University of Graz and RCPE - Research Center Pharmaceutical Engineering GmbH. Medikamenten-Engpässe mit KI vermeiden 💊🤖 Fraunhofer Austria leitet das FFG-geförderte Projekt „Remedy", um die Versorgungssicherheit für Medikamente in Österreich zu stärken. Gemeinsam mit RCPE - Research Center Pharmaceutical Engineering GmbH, der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg und der WU (Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien) wird geprüft, ob Künstliche Intelligenz genutzt werden kann, um Lieferengpässe frühzeitig zu prognostizieren – ein entscheidender Schritt für die medizinische Versorgungssicherheit. Das interdisziplinäre Team aus Technik- und Rechtsexpert:innen untersucht innerhalb eines Jahres, wie heterogene Daten wie Lagerbestände, Infektionszahlen oder internationale Ereignisse genutzt und harmonisiert werden können. 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦! This week we introduce Simone Eder, one of the inspiring minds behind our success! “My name is Simone Eder. I have a master’s degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Natural Sciences. I currently work as a Principal Scientist and Group Leader at RCPE in Area III: Next-Generation Manufacturing. I chose a career in science because I enjoy working in an interdisciplinary team, facing new challenges and creating innovative solutions every day, rather than doing routine work. I believe that working in science offers you a great opportunity to constantly learn new things and get in touch with interesting, inspiring people. You stay up to date in your working area, can create new fields of expertise and eventually grow and make a real difference – not only to the scientific community but also to society. Currently, I work in the field of personalized manufacturing, specifically in 3D-printing medical and pharmaceutical inserts and implants, as well as oral tablets. During this work, we developed 3D-printed personalized vaginal inserts to treat stress urinary incontinence, also known as pessaries, which are an easy and straightforward treatment strategy. This work yielded a nomination for the Houska Prize – the greatest private award for application-oriented innovation and research in Austria – showing the relevance of our work to female patients. In the future, I hope we will develop other innovative products that fit the requirements of specific patient groups, such as women, children, and elderly people making their lives easier.
