We are excited to share the Coastal Observer app, a tool powered by SPOTTERON Citizen Science that aligns with our mission of creating sustainable solutions for our coastal region! This app empowers you to become a citizen scientist and monitor our changing environment. 🌍🌱👨🏾🔬 How it works: 📲 Use your smartphone to capture photos of weather and water conditions. ⛈️ Your observations help researchers understand the local impacts of rising tides and storms. Why this matters to us: ● We can encourage our community to participate in monitoring coastal changes. ● The data collected can inform AI-powered solutions for coastal resilience. ● This supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Climate Action. Its main objective is to protect and stabilize the coastal cliffs in Israel. At today’s #CitizenScience seminar at @boku.vienna, Lukas Landler shared interesting information, as well as insights and results from the #AmphiBiom project. Amphibians belong to the most endangered species, even more than, e.g., coral reefs or sharks. Habitat loss and fragmentation of habitat are key threats. But did you know that small, shallow ponds can help stabilize or grow green toad populations? To increase such habitat/pond structures is one aim of #AmphiBiom, a #CitizenScience project that distributed 300 ponds to Citizen Scientists in Austria. With the valuable help of citizens, #AmphiBiom provides new habitat on the one hand, and researches on amphibian populations on the other. Sightings (including photos and audio-recordings) of amphibians are uploaded to the #AmphiApp, which is running on the @SPOTTERON Platform. It was great to see, most Citizen Scientists enjoy the AmphiApp and participating in the AmphiBiom project. Thanks to AmphiBiom for the great opportunity to learn about the progress of the project! The #CoastSnap App has a new feature - a real-time leaderboard for each CoastSnap station around the world! It's country vs country, region vs region and community vs community in the race to see which CoastSnap station can take the prize for the most photo submissions. The 2024 leaderboard looks almost in the bag for the El Sardinero 1 CoastSnap station in Cantabria, Spain with 1169 submissions this year. This is followed by its adjacent station El Sardinero 2, with Bar Beach in Australia rounding out the top 3. Today is the official start of #COP29 in Baku.🌍 While we hope the discussions in Azerbaijan will lead to essential and rapid action on the climate and biodiversity crises, each of us can also make a difference. By using #CitizenScience and #CitizenAction Apps, everyone can contribute to documentation and raising awareness. For instance, the new #P51 project by La Ruta del Clima empowers citizens in Costa Rica to document their experiences in the climate crisis — a few of them are shared in this post (storm, flood, landslide, warming of the sea). The #FridaysForFuture App prototype, e.g., enables citizens worldwide to share their observations related to climate and biodiversity.
