We inspire wide-scale global action on industrial decarbonization as an essential part of tackling climate change.
Info
We are a UNIDO-led network of international initiatives working to accelerate the shift of industrial organizations – both large and small – away from fossil fuels. Working with governments, the private sector and finance institutions in emerging economies, we help industry to rethink how they use energy. This involves designing solutions tailored to specific country needs and taking what we learn to inspire global action on industrial decarbonization. Our work is centered on three key areas of opportunity: Energy efficiency: Increasing the uptake of measures and technology to boost efficient energy use. Renewables and alternative fuels: Helping industries from all sectors to generate heat from a variety of emerging renewable sources. Heavy industry decarbonization: Creating a thriving market for near zero carbon industrial products, starting with steel, cement and concrete.

Why countries should integrate industries into their #NDCs 🏭🌿 Our infographic – part of our new initiative on countries’ climate commitments or Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) – shows why it’s critical for nations to include industrial #GHGemissions. 1. Industrial emissions are rising fast, particularly for heavy industries: Heavy industry sectors – #steel #cement and #chemicals – account for around 70% of industrial emissions. 2. To keep 1.5ºC in reach, emissions from heavy industries should fall by 20% by 2030 and 90% by 2050. 3. Transition to net-zero industries requires massive investment: Decarbonizing steel alone requires up to USD 335 billion of cumulative investment by 2050. 4. Investment needs are not yet investment opportunities: 90% of businesses say they would invest more if governments implemented policies to address sector specific barriers. 5. This decade is decisive for industry decarbonization, especially for developing countries: ¾ of the global urban infrastructure that will exist in 2050 is yet to be built. 🤝 The UNIDO-led Net Zero Partnership for Industry #Decarbonization programme has developed a Support Package to help countries include industry-specific targets and plans in their new climate commitments (NDCs 3.0). 🔗 Download the infographic here: https://lnkd.in/eaSPzWju #IndustriesInNDCs #IndustryForClimate #ClimateAction #ClimatePromise #ParisAgreement #ActNow

Q. Why should countries integrate industries into their climate plans or Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs)? A. Because since 2000, #GHGemissions from industry have increased faster than in any other sector and continue to grow every year - only a fraction of national plans include targets to cut industrial emissions. Our infographic highlights important facts and figures: 🏭 Heavy industry sectors – #steel #cement and #chemicals – account for around 70% of industrial emissions. 📉 To keep 1.5ºC in reach, emissions from heavy industries should fall by 20% by 2030 and 90% by 2050. 💵 Decarbonising steel alone requires up to USD 335 billion of cumulative investment by 2050. 💰 90% of businesses say they would invest more if governments implemented policies to address sector specific barriers. 🏢 ¾ of the global urban infrastructure that will exist in 2050 is yet to be built. The UNIDO-led Net Zero Partnership for Industry #Decarbonization programme is developing a Support Package to help countries include industry-specific targets and plans in their new climate commitments (#NDCs 3.0). 🔗 Download the infographic here: https://lnkd.in/eaSPzWju #IndustriesInNDCs #IndustryForClimate #ClimateAction #ClimatePromise #ParisAgreement #ActNow #Decarbonization #COP29 #IDDI NDC Partnership, UNDP Climate, WRI Climate, Global Matchmaking Platform, Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz, International Climate Initiative, NIM - The Net-Zero Industries Mission
