Recently Sustainability Managerin Michaela Kraus held a guest lecture at Johannes Kepler Universität Linz about our way to a more sustainable steel production. With #greentecsteel we have an ambitious but realistic step-by-step plan to our big goal ➡️ net zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, we already offer our premium-quality products with a reduced carbon footprint (greentec steel Edition) and from 2027, with the commissioning of one EAF in Linz and one in Donawitz, we will be able to reduce our carbon footprint even further. 💪 We will keep you up2date here and on https://lnkd.in/gQ92uPhC. Groundbreaking for a secure energy future!    Today’s ground-breaking ceremony for the "Secure Power Supply Central Upper Austria" – a project by the APG Austrian Power Grid AG – marked another important step on our company’s journey toward a sustainable energy future.     The initiative is significant for the industry-wide decarbonization and the regional distribution of renewable energy.    With the infrastructure expansion planned by APG, we can make critical progress toward our greentec steel program’s goal: achieving net-zero steel production by mid-century.    Starting in 2027, we aim to replace one coal-based blast furnace each at our Linz and Donawitz sites with green electricity powered electric arc furnaces (EAFs). By 2029 this transition will reduce our CO2 emissions by around 30% compared to 2019 levels. It is Austria’s largest climate protection program.     However, such a significant transformation requires not only the sufficient availability of green electricity at competitive prices. Even more important is an efficient and integrated energy infrastructure. ♻ Circular Economy - preserving resources through high-quality recycling 🌿 To achieve our target of steel production with net zero carbon emissions by 2050, voestalpine will be commissioning one electric arc furnace (EAF) at each of its sites in Linz and Donawitz in 2027.
