A.G. Coombs Advisory and Exergenics’ Sydney Airport Chilled Water Plant Optimisation project has been recognised at the 2024 AIRAH Awards in both the "Excellence in Innovation" and "Excellence in Sustainability" categories. The project has also been selected as a finalist in the 2025 CIBSE Building Performance Awards in the category of "Best Digital Innovation – Project Delivery." The CIBSE Building Performance Awards will be announced in London in February 2025. Sydney Airport's International Terminal 1 is the first airport in the world to implement major HVAC central plant optimisation changes based on the pioneering Australian-designed Exergenics platform. The system combines physics-supplemented machine learning and AI simulation techniques to improve the control logic of the terminal’s chiller plant and secondary pumping system. The project has led to major reductions in energy usage and carbon emissions – making a significant contribution to Sydney Airport’s net zero ambitions. ** Advisory Note — Integrated Fire Mode Testing: Fundamental to Building Fire & Safety Compliance ** Modern fire protection systems are now often integrated into other building systems and require a comprehensive testing approach to assure they will operate in line with the building’s fire safety strategy when required. In the past, fire protection systems in buildings were relatively straightforward and generally operated independently of other systems. Over the last 20 years, due in part to the introduction of performance-based design (e.g. fire engineering), these systems have become increasingly integrated with other building systems, in particular mechanical services (e.g. smoke hazard management). Alteration to the National Construction Code (NCC), Deemed-to-Satisfy (DtS) smoke hazard management system usually results in more complex systems that have a higher susceptibility to failure. Often these systems are poorly documented or if adequately documented by the designer, the documentation is not retained. There is currently no regulatory requirement for an integrated fire mode matrix to be provided at project handover stage. As such these systems are frequently not well understood by the building operations team...
