Celebrate cultural diversity at work. 18 March -19 April 2024.

About us

We’re encouraging Australians to celebrate cultural diversity at work by sharing a meal & conversation from 18 March - 19 April 2024. Also take time to learn about Ramadan with our extended dates! Share your stories with the hashtag #atoh24 The concept is simple: workmates bring a dish that tells a story about their own cultural heritage and influences to share with colleagues. These stories at the shared table offer an opportunity to discover ‘A taste of what makes Australia great’. Workplaces play an important role in driving social cohesion, and for many businesses, diversity and inclusion is key to remaining competitive and relevant in a fast-changing world. Research into culturally diverse organisations points to a range of tangible and intangible benefits, including increased productivity, better problem solving, greater innovation and insights into new markets overseas. Valuing cultural diversity is also essential for meeting the challenges of skill shortages, global labour market competition and an ageing population. A Taste of Harmony offers an easy, free and fun opportunity for individuals and organisations big and small to show their commitment to cultural diversity. Workplaces from every industry are encouraged to participate by gathering colleagues together over a delicious lunch made up of foods from different lands. Employees will learn something new about each other, and be guaranteed a good feed! A Taste of Harmony is an initiative of the Scanlon Foundation held in March each year to coincide with Harmony Day. The 2016 event attracted close to 320,000 participants and 5,300 workplaces nationally. Register now at www.tasteofharmony.org.au to participate and celebrate our cultural diversity in the most delicious way!

  • Cultural diversity in the workplace is more than just a checkbox – it’s a strength that drives innovation and growth. Most importantly, it means that employees are able to bring their whole self to work. At A Taste of Harmony, we believe that supporting cultural diversity should be a year-round commitment, not just a seasonal conversation. As we approach the start of promoting our next campaign, we encourage workplaces to continue looking for opportunities to embrace cultural diversity. This could include booking in training, planning inclusive Christmas celebrations, reviewing policies, creating better hiring practices or organising cultural exchange lunches/sharing opportunities. Let’s work together to make embracing cultural diversity a daily practice. #Workplaceculture #ATOH2025

  • Understanding Different Cultures in Conflict Resolution   Conflict is a natural part of any workplace, but resolving it effectively requires more than just mediation—it demands cultural awareness.   Different cultures have varied approaches to conflict—some may be more direct, while others might prioritise harmony and indirect communication. Understanding these differences is crucial for addressing conflicts in a way that is respectful and effective for everyone involved.   Here’s how you can integrate cultural understanding into conflict resolution:   1. Listen and Learn: Encourage active listening to understand the cultural context behind a conflict. 2. Cultural Competency Training: Provide training for managers and leaders on handling conflicts in culturally diverse teams. 3. Use Culturally Aware Mediators: Involve neutral mediators who are sensitive to cultural differences. 4. Promote Open Communication: Foster an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing conflicts openly and respectfully.   In a diverse workplace, understanding the cultural dimensions of conflict is not just beneficial—it’s essential for a productive environment. Let’s embrace cultural awareness in our conflict resolution practices. #ConflictResolution #CulturalAwareness #WorkplaceDiversity"

  • Embracing Cultural Diversity in Leadership: A Path Forward for Workplaces   In a multicultural nation like Australia, it's vital that our workplaces reflect the diverse communities we serve. There is a growing recognition of the need for greater cultural diversity in senior leadership roles.   While this commitment is commendable, it also serves as a reminder for all organisations—public or private—to consider how they are nurturing culturally diverse leaders within their ranks. Here are a few key areas to think about:   1. Establishing Clear Standards: Are there clear, written commitments within your organisation that promote culturally respectful and inclusive workplaces? Consider creating or reinforcing leadership statements that underscore the importance of cultural diversity at every level.   2. Building Cultural Understanding: Continuous learning is key. Developing resources and networks that promote cultural understanding can help create a workplace environment where everyone feels valued. Regular training and development programs focused on cultural awareness can make a big difference.   3. Mentoring and Sponsorship: Diverse leaders need visible paths to advancement. Mentorship and sponsorship programs that specifically aim to support culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) employees can help bridge gaps and open doors to leadership roles.   4. Recruitment and Progression: Look closely at your recruitment and promotion practices. Are they truly equitable? Modernising these processes to ensure a fair assessment of merit while considering diverse backgrounds is essential to building a leadership team that reflects your workforce.   5. Setting Benchmarks: How do you measure progress? Setting tangible targets for diverse representation in leadership roles, and holding yourself accountable to these benchmarks, can help drive meaningful change.   Cultural diversity is more than just a box to check—it's a strength that can lead to more innovative, inclusive, and effective workplaces. As we continue to promote cultural diversity through initiatives like A Taste of Harmony, let's also keep the conversation going about the importance of diverse leadership all year round.

  • Cultural Diversity in Problem-Solving In today’s complex world, diverse teams bring a wealth of perspectives that drive innovative solutions.   Cultural diversity isn’t just about representation; it’s about leveraging the unique viewpoints and experiences that each person brings to the table. Diverse perspectives can transform the way we approach problem-solving, leading to more creative and effective outcomes.   Here’s how you can encourage diverse thinking in your workplace: 1. Inclusive Brainstorming: Create an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas. 2. Cross-Cultural Teams: Form teams with diverse cultural backgrounds to tackle complex challenges. 3. Celebrate Different Approaches: Acknowledge and value different problem-solving styles influenced by cultural backgrounds. 4. Provide Cultural Competency Training: Equip your team with the skills to understand and integrate diverse perspectives.   The key to innovation lies in our diversity—let’s continue to harness this strength for better problem-solving and decision-making. #Innovation #DiversityInTheWorkplace #ProblemSolving
