About us
Advance Care Planning Australia (ACPA) is a national program funded by the Australian Government Department of Health that promotes and encourages people to reflect on their current and future health goals, values and beliefs. An Advance Care Plan can empower and prepare individuals, their loved ones, carers and healthcare professionals for important healthcare decisions in the future. This reduces anxiety and improves outcomes for all involved. ACPA works to ensure advance care planning discussions become a key part of routine health care conversations across Australia and delivers an extensive range of programs, services, training and education to foster innovation and research in this important area. www.advancecareplanning.org.au

The new Aged Care Act and Strengthened Aged Care Standards will lead to major changes across the aged care system and transform Australia’s aged care laws to put the rights and needs of older people first. Following the Bill passing in Parliament this week, Dr Greg Parker, Palliative Care Doctor and Director ACPA says, “The introduction of a new Act and new Aged Care Strengthened Quality Standards reinforce the need for a central focus on the older person’s right to autonomy, and to a central and active role in decisions about their care". “We shared our voice with the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee through our submission which outlines the important role advance care planning plays in person-led care and ensuring a person’s wishes and preferences are considered in care decisions when they are not able to speak for themselves”. There is lots of work underway to ensure everyone is ready for what will change from 1 July 2025 – ACPA will continue to support aged care providers in their efforts to properly inform and enable people to do advance care planning.
