Australia’s export fodder is a 1.3 million tonne industry worth a booming half a billion dollars annually, providing strong financial returns to growers. The AgriFutures #ExportFodder Program is investing in two priority projects that are driving the success of these markets. 🌱🚜 The Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development (WA) is investigating ways to reduce weather-induced fungal staining on oaten hay windrow. This issue affects the visual quality of the hay, its suitability for export and the economic returns for both growers and exporting companies. 🌿🌧️ McMullen Consulting is leading an ongoing project to ensure industry compliance with chemical regulations across different export sectors. By monitoring export market chemical requirements and regulatory changes, they help export companies and growers stay informed. They also maintain the online chemical recording system, Fodder Safe, for the Australian export hay industry. 🧪📋 Read more about the importance of these projects for the export fodder industry. 🌍📈 https://bit.ly/3Z7kWbS australian fodder industry association

We are thrilled to be partnering with Australian Wool Innovation and Beef + Lamb New Zealand on a project that aims to use nanotechnology to develop a tea tree oil biopesticide that provides prolonged, safe and residue-free flystrike protection for sheep. 🐑🪰🌱
A new Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) co-funded project aims to use nanotechnology to develop a tea tree oil biopesticide that provides prolonged, safe and residue-free flystrike protection for sheep. The project has been launched in response to the emergence of chemical resistance in sheep blowflies. This is compromising the effectiveness of current sheep flystrike chemical control options, plus there is potential for their access to be further restricted due to workplace health and safety, and residue and environmental concerns. A solution could be to use eco-friendly biopesticides made from natural essential oils like tea tree oil. Unfortunately, when biopesticides are applied as a blowfly repellent using current delivery methods, the biopesticides have shorter protection periods and lack potency compared to the available chemical options. This means that, to date, biopesticides have not been a practical option for woolgrowers. However, nanotechnology might provide a solution. “Led by the Queensland Government’s Department of Primary Industries, this project will design and test natural and environmentally friendly tea tree oil nano-formulations to give prolonged periods of protection against flystrike, with minimal residues and off-target effects,” said AWI Program Manager, Animal Wellbeing and Industry Resilience, Carolina Diaz. The research is co-funded by AWI, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and AgriFutures (representing the tea tree oil industry). The Queensland Government’s Department of Primary Industries and the University of Queensland are providing in-kind contributions. In-kind contributions of technical expertise and tea tree oil for the trials is also being provided by Main Camp, the largest tea tree oil producer in Australia.
