Every town, every pocket, every person is unique with a story to tell. Southern Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia.

About us

The Alexandrina region is uniquely positioned in the picturesque Southern Fleurieu Peninsula at the end of the River Murray and as a gateway to the iconic Coorong. It is within an easy drive from metropolitan Adelaide – about an hour and a quarter or 85 kms south from Adelaide Airport. Alexandrina Council comprises some 182,684 hectares. It extends from the north-western side of Lake Alexandrina to the Murray Mouth, and the western end of the Coorong - taking in river communities of Langhorne Creek, Milang, Clayton Bay, Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island. It extends along the south coast to Port Elliot and inland to Mount Compass and Strathalbyn. The Alexandrina vision is about ‘connecting communities’ through regional innovation, a thriving environment, quality of life and wellbeing for all, increasing cultural vitality and activating vibrant spaces. The Alexandrina community encompasses many townships, villages and rural areas, with two major hubs – Strathalbyn to the north-east (edge of the Adelaide Hills) and Goolwa (to the south at the end of the River Murray). The Alexandrina area is one of the fastest growing regional areas in South Australia – experiencing peri-urban trends while also noted for its high quality agricultural production (the second largest industry in the region). The area is renowned for its environment, heritage and lifestyle. Our population also extends to the south alongside stunning coastline, acting as an annual nursery for Southern-Right Whales and a popular holiday and visitor destination. To the north, the population disperses throughout rolling hills and pastures, as a mix of rural living and large broadacre farming and vineyards.

  • 📜⛵From 1877 to 2024 🤳🛥️ - the historic Goolwa Wharf Precinct is restored, repaired, revitalised and ready for a new chapter.⚓ With funding support from the Australian Government and the Government of South Australia, Alexandrina Council embarked on a multi-million-dollar project to upgrade the Wharf, the Wharf Shed, the Signal Point Experience Centre and the surrounds of the Precinct. The project included the reconstruction of the heritage-listed Wharf, the renovation and renewal of the heritage-listed Wharf Shed, new public toilets, sealed car park areas, upgraded pathways and signage, and internal and external improvements to the Signal Point Experience Centre. This investment has preserved the significant heritage of the precinct, improved safety and accessibility for the community, and provided opportunities to activate the area through new business opportunities, festivals and community events and opportunities to share the stories of First Nations people, Goolwa’s steam-powered riverport history and the river ecology of the area. This video, created by our contractor McMahon Services Australia, shows some early images of the precinct and the progression of this major project. Addressing the deterioration of this historic site and enhancing the opportunities at the Precinct has been a long-standing project for Alexandrina Council and the community. We are pleased to be approaching the finishing line with some final touches underway. Council hopes to hold a community celebration in the new year with permission from our funding partners. Find out more about this project on our website at https://lnkd.in/g5R_DcCy

  • 🗺️📍Have you seen the new wayfinding signage at the Goolwa Wharf Precinct? 👀 ⚓ 🛣️ There are two large entrance signs - one near the Visitor Information Centre on the corner of Cadell Street and Cutting Road and one on the corner of Hay Street and Porter Street. The design pays homage to the timber of the heritage-listed wharf. The Signal Point Experience Centre also has new entrance signs and a new logo that takes inspiration from the history of Signal Point. The shape and colouring of the flag also reflect the elements of the permanent Yuntulun Ku:li-war exhibition inside the building.🚩 There are signposts strategically located around the precinct directing visitors to important facilities. If you're looking for an overview of the precinct and a guide to some of the businesses and attractions at the site, scan the QR code to find our visitor webpage for the Goolwa Wharf Precinct.
