Kite flying has always been a part of Mohammad Balkhi’s life. As a child he would run through the streets of Kabul with his friends sending brightly coloured, home-made kites aloft into Afghanistan’s azure skies. Now resettled in Melbourne as a refugee, he hopes to turn his passion into a business. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gE-ANmpg

Today, 25th November 2024 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and today UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime will launch the report “Femicides in 2023: Global estimates of intimate partner/family member femicides”. This research tells us that every 10 minutes, partners and family members killed a woman intentionally in 2023. The crisis of gender-based violence is urgent. AMES supports the UN goals of ending impunity for perpetrators, and showing zero tolerance of violence against women, it supports Australia’s National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032, and AMES invests in the prevention of violence against women in culturally and linguistically diverse communities of Victoria and Australia. It was a pleasure hosting Dr Daniel Mulino, federal MP for Fraser who recently visited our Footscray site and attended a #HSP (settlement) orientation session for recently arrived refugee clients from Myanmar. He spoke to the group about government services they are able to access. #AMES #AMESAustralia #Settlement #Melbourne #Footscray

I recently toured AMES Australia Footscray. AMES supports migrants and refugees to build new lives, through settlement services, English classes and vocational courses. It was great to meet students who are currently undertaking a Certificate 3 in aged care and early childhood education.
