AMTA's annual EME Symposium was held yesterday at Telstra’s theatre in Melbourne. With an opening statement by the Hon. Michelle Rowland MP, the event highlighted our global leadership in EME safety, and the successful closure of 3G. A full house witnessed key presentations from Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), Australian Radiation Protection And Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, marking the first event with all three agencies involved. Other key presentations given included Telstra's 5G Beamforming and Efficiency, and TPG Telecom's summary on EME standards and global collaboration. Addressing AMTA's EME safety program, Minister Rowland said, "Australia is a global leader in mobile network safety standards and International bodies such as the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), recognise our country’s strong regulatory settings around radio frequency and electromagnetic emission safety". Feedback highlights: 🌟 Engaging sessions 🌟 Direct talks with researchers 🌟 Comprehensive agency presentations 🌟 Live EME testing Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to a successful event! 🙌 Link to Minster’s speech https://lnkd.in/gbMZqdZc

That’s a wrap on AMTA’s Mobile Carrier’s Forum national industry roadshow! Not even torrential rain and Black Friday sales could keep 120 mobile industry reps away from attending AMTA’s final MCF industry roadshow event at Telstra’s Sydney HQ this afternoon. During November around 400 attendees at sessions in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Sydney have heard from AMTA, MCF, Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom representatives on the latest policy and regulatory changes and AMTA’s advocacy on behalf of the industry. AMTA CEO Louise Hyland praised the constructive working relationships amongst the diverse ecosystem of network operators, mobile network infrastructure providers and suppliers who build and maintain thousands of mobile facilities each year, for the benefit of all Australians. Next week AMTA’s focus shifts to sunny Melbourne where it will host its annual EME Symposium with speakers from Australian Radiation Protection And Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, and Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) together with industry updates on safety initiatives and surveys. https://lnkd.in/g5wctwSK Pictured: From Left to Right – Rob Myles (AMTA) , Andrew S. AMTA held its Annual General Meeting for 2024, marking another year of significant achievements and forward-thinking initiatives. This year has been filled with pivotal activities, including the closure of Australia's 3G networks. AMTA played a crucial role in: - Ensuring a safe transition off the 3G mobile networks for all Australians. - Advocating for adequate spectrum availability. - Rethinking critical infrastructure policies at state and federal levels to pave the way for greater investment in mobile network infrastructure. - Maintaining Australia's leadership in setting and measuring mobile network safety standards relating to electromagnetic energy (EME). This year also marks AMTA’s 30th anniversary—a time to reflect on and celebrate the incredible progression of our industry. From the early days of AMPS, 2G, and 3G technologies to the advancements of 4G, 5G, and beyond, mobile technology has brought immense social and economic opportunities to Australians. As Australia navigates its digital future, innovation must continue to open pathways to new mobile ecosystems and services, promising transformative impacts on sectors like health and education with AI-driven applications and real-time data exchanges. The mobile sector's transformative power must be supported by purposeful policy and regulatory settings. Our goal remains clear: To ensure AMTA continues to be the voice of the industry, advocating for the issues that matter and affirming Australia’s position as a global leader in mobile connectivity. A huge thank you to the AMTA Board for their continued support, to our fantastic AMTA team, and to our members and stakeholders. Read our full Impact Report for 2024 below. https://lnkd.in/gJa4EtD4

AMTA welcomes the release of draft reforms to the Commonwealth telecommunications powers and immunities framework for a period of community consultation. This morning, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts announced it is seeking feedback on proposed amendments to the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 2018 and the Telecommunications Code of Practice 2021. If enacted, these revisions will improve the performance and accelerate the deployment of the latest mobile and fixed line telecommunications network infrastructure. Throughout 2023 and 2024, AMTA has actively advocated for the needs of its members that implement national mobile and fixed infrastructure, making submissions and representations to the Minister - the Hon. Catherine King MP, and the Department on the need for these reforms. AMTA also made the case for reform during the ACCC’s Regional Mobile Infrastructure Inquiry and the House of Representatives Inquiry into co-investment in multi-carrier regional mobile infrastructure. The changes will enable the carriers to undertake these activities with immunity from some State and Territory legislation, including council planning regulations. If implemented, the changes will encourage network investment so that mobile telecommunications networks and national fixed line networks can continue to meet the needs of modern Australia. https://lnkd.in/g8mUFJJQ

Less than a week to go to "Check Your Tech" - Australia's 3G Networks Switch Off from the 28th of October. 3G devices will no longer be supported and will not be able to make calls, including emergency voice calls to Triple Zero on any Australian mobile network. In addition, devices that have been purchased overseas or from a retailer selling imported phones, might not be fully supported once the 3G network shuts down. Impacted devices may also include smartwatches, tablets, in-home personal emergency alarms, EFTPOS terminals and fire and security alarms. Louise Hyland, CEO of AMTA says: “We strongly recommend that consumers who need to upgrade their handsets purchase them from reputable dealers based in Australia or consult their mobile service providers for suitable options. For those who have acquired phones from overseas, it’s crucial to use the Check My Device tool to confirm compatibility after the 3G networks close, or contact their service provider right away." With the 3G switchover less than 2 weeks away, it's important that consumers are purchasing the right devices. We are working with industry to mitigate the potential risks associated with the 3G shutdown and grey market device. From AMTA CEO Louise Hyland "We have become aware that certain retailers are still selling handsets that are not fit for purpose in the Australian market. [These phones] will not be compatible with Australia's 4G and 5G networks once the 3G networks close."
