Renovating is often a daunting prospect. But, as our next project showcases, this need not be so. The owners of this beautiful heritage home at Northcote are repeat clients. In the first round of renovations, we covered their pressing and non-structural requirements, urging the clients to live in their newly renovated home to get a better sense for the next stage. Our clients heeded our advice. And now, they’re back for more! A perfect example of giving yourself the space - both mentally and financially - to fine tune your requirements and get what you want. All without breaking the bank or compromising on your needs and wants. Interested but unsure where to start? Last week, we shared 5 Tips to help you choose between 𝑹𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒆 and 𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒆. Allow us to spark your imagination with our award-winning Cascade House. Here’s how we renovated and expanded this 1940s Art-Deco home in Northcote to • Make room for an expanding family, • Retain its heritage elements, and • Reflect the values of the owners 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐒𝐢𝐭𝐞: We moved the living room to the north-facing new extension to leverage the beautiful light. Tall glass doors and a new cosy inner courtyard provided views to blue skies and lush green landscape in all directions. 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰: Repositioning the main door to the centre of the plan enabled intuitive separation of spaces meant for socialisation versus resting. Sliding doors that completely recessed into the wall allowed the living area to seamlessly flow into the backyard. 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝: Clever hidden storage along the corridor that connected the older and newer parts of the home, under the stairs and around the edges of the living area helped cater for future storage needs. 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: A cosy in-built study on the upstairs landing behind a recessed sliding door ensured privacy and quiet for adults working-from-home while children played below. 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Retaining the original heritage door to separate the older and newer parts of the home enabled better thermal zoning, while an extra-wide, new main pivot door made room for strollers and bulky furniture or equipment. Minimal step changes were included that are modifiable to transition ramps in future. Want to know how you could renovate/extend your existing home to meet your future needs? Chat with us today! This beautiful home with its soaring cathedral ceiling had excellent bones and was a true “diamond in the rough.” However, the lack of natural light and a central staircase disrupted both flow and function. Enter the jewelers. AKA Andever. • Through expanded glazing and a new gable window, our design was able to re-connect with both earth and sky. • Moving the staircase to the corner improved flow with design details that echo the beautiful oregon timber roof beams. • The original beams are referenced elsewhere in key details including the kitchen island and hidden bar joinery. The resulting space enables light to dance and play against the many textures and new surfaces. Creating all the right elements to let this diamond sparkle and shine! Want andever to assess and polish your diamond-in-the-rough home? 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐛? Developments are generally perceived to be negative and extractive. But when introducing something new to a community, both the developer team and community need to think beyond the site, looking at a wider suburb-level context and approaching it from the lens of repair. - What has been damaged or lost? - What can be improved in the wider area? - What role will this development play in the larger community? Addressing these questions indicates a much-wider ambition that shifts the dial from distrust to trust in the development team. With this approach, negotiations with Council and neighbours can take on a more positive collaborative approach. Research has shown that resident communities who feel connected to their suburbs report better wellbeing. By ensuring that developmental interventions (including architecture) support the community, we can help the community repair and strengthen their connection to their suburb, thereby supporting overall wellbeing. Prioritizing good outcomes, a flourishing neighborhood and community. Both inside and out.
