  • The Australian National University Korea Institute is elevating Australia’s understanding of South Korean geopolitics, culture and language. 🇰🇷 Housed at CAP, the Institute works to promote the country's presence in Australia and build critical research links. With one of the largest cultural exports in the world, a highly developed economy and important regional security considerations, South Korea is an essential area for study in East Asia. The institute's director, Professor Kyung Moon Hwang, wants South Korea to receive the attention it deserves in Australia. The Institute is vital in promoting Korean language programs and studies. During the 2020 bushfires, the Institute even played a life-saving role in disaster communication for the Australian-Korean community. Sometimes, taking a powerful stance in the name of solidarity and resistance against violence looks like beautifully woven Afghan rugs, felted slippers, traditional jewellery, soul-warming food and art that expresses pain. 🙌 This week at ANU, we were honoured to host the Women’s Market, where vendors sold an assortment of wares to raise money to support women under Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Led by ANU academic and human rights campaigner Susan Hutchinson, the market was held on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is also the first day of the United Nations' 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign. More than a call to action, the annual campaign is an urgent call for global change. The women’s market is an example of one of the ways people can get involved locally - the idea being that a small step forward can make a big difference. 👏 📷 : Olivia Wenholz

  • It was an honour to host the Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr Kao Kim Hourn yesterday evening at The Australian National University to celebrate 50 Years of ASEAN-Australia relations. Organised by our ANU Southeast Asia Research Institute with support from the ASEAN-Australia Centre, the event considered the importance of Australian-ASEAN relations in regional stability, peace and prosperity. Noting how Australia proudly became ASEAN's first Dialogue Partner in 1974, the Secretary-General discussed why a strong, united, and resilient ASEAN benefits not only member states but also the broader Asia-Pacific region. Hosting Dr Kao during this important 50-year milestone exemplifies the critical role the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific plays in regional affairs. Through research and education, the College acts as a hub for diplomacy, collaboration and engagement between Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Thank you to everyone who attended and to all the honourable delegates and diplomates who joined us for the event.

  • Several of CAP’s Indonesia experts travelled to Japan this month for a joint conference hosted by The Australian National University (ANU) and Ritsumeikan University (RU) at their Kinugasa campus in Kyoto. The theme of the conference was “Jokowi’s Decade: How he impacted Indonesia and the world". Speakers included Associate Professor Marcus Mietzner (ANU), Professor Jun Honna (RU), Dr Sana Jaffrey (ANU) and Dr Rizal Sukma (CSIS, Jakarta). The conference provided an insightful analysis of Jokowi's Presidency and raised questions about his legacy. Thank you to everyone who attended and our ANU Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs who co-hosted the event with the Ritsumeikan University Institute of International Relations and Area Studies.

  • It was wonderful to see our delegation of First Nations and Pacific Islander students from The Australian National University at COP29 Azerbaijan. Led by Dr George Carter (Salā Dr George Carter) from our ANU Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, the delegation included students from our Crawford School of Public Policy and academics from our College. Students attended various panel sessions, discussions and dialogue events related to their unique research topics and academic interests. This year's group contributed to the Australia, Samoa, Vanuatu and Kiribati delegations covering Finance, Just Transition, Transparency, Gender, Local Community and Indigenous Peoples, and Adaptation. Sending a delegation of First Nation and Pacific Islander delegates to #COP29 ensures that #Indigenous perspectives have a seat at the table. This is at the core of our work at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. By engaging with global issues like climate change with representatives from our region, we guarantee that diverse perspectives and those impacted by #climatechange in their communities are part of climate dialogue. Congratulations to all the students who took part in this year's conference. We hope this learning experience supports you on your journey towards becoming a future leader in our region. We are confident that our alumni will play an active role in shaping a better tomorrow. 🎉 🌏 This opportunity was made possible by funding from the 2024 ANU Climate Alumni Leadership Program from our ANU Pacific Institute.
