Great to see #biochar supplied by Byron Biochar including Green Man Char and Byron Biochar's #powderchar has been used by RMIT Student Cathy Fan to replace all the sand in traditional concrete, creating a composite material. She fabricated a façade with it, which is currently on display at the RMIT graduation exhibition. The project explores the use of biochar as a sustainable replacement for sand in concrete, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and enable innovative architectural applications. Testing began with 100x100mm chunks, progressed to 200x200mm samples, and culminated in the fabrication of an 800x2000mm façade. This façade features biomimetic surface textures, designed to foster habitats for plants and insects, merging architectural performance with ecological benefits.

Biochar and Wood Vinegar Production from Southland Carbon southlandcarbon.co.nz Southland Carbon, based in Pukerau, New Zealand, is making significant strides in carbon sequestration through large-scale biochar production. Utilising the #CharMaker technology developed by Earth Systems, they transform organic waste into biochar—a stable form of carbon that, when added to soil, enhances fertility and locks away carbon for centuries. This process not only mitigates climate change by reducing atmospheric CO₂ but also supports sustainable agriculture. Their efforts align with the principles of the circular economy, turning waste into valuable resources. Southland Carbon The CharMaker technology enables the efficient transformation of biomass into biochar, facilitating carbon drawdown at scale. The Charmaker By integrating this technology, Southland Carbon contributes to New Zealand's climate goals and promotes sustainable land management practices. Their work has garnered attention within the biochar community, including recognition from the Australia New Zealand Biochar Industry Group (ANZBIG). Such initiatives are crucial in advancing carbon drawdown and fostering a circular economy in NZ.
