Calling all composers! 💫 Music rights management organisation, APRA AMCOS, in partnership with the Australian Music Centre (AMC) and SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music, has announced that the 2025 Art Music Fund is now open for submissions! The Art Music Fund provides AU$7,500 funding each for 11 established composers, nine from Australia and two from Aotearoa New Zealand, to create commissioned work with the intention of ensuring a long artistic life for the work and its composer. Previous winners have included Anna Liebzeit, Cat Hope, Christine Pan, Dominik Karski, Erkki Veltheim, Liza Lim, Mindy Meng Wang, Monica Lim and Nadia Freeman. 📆 Applications are open now until Sunday 16 February 2025. A very warm congratulations to Kankawa Nagarra for winning the 2024 SOUNDMERCH Australian Music Prize for her debut album Wirlmarni. Kankawa Nagarra is known for her work as a teacher, human rights advocate, and environmental activist, and is currently touring this album. During her tour, we were lucky to receive a special performance at the APRA AMCOS building last month. “I am so thrilled and proud to receive this award. Thank you so much to AMP. Coming from the remote community of Wangkatjungka, which in the past has often been shown in a negative light with the focus on issues and problems, people don’t often get to see the beautiful and positive aspects of my home. I know this award brings much pride to the people of Wangkatjungka, especially to the school and all the children who I hope to be a role model for. I dedicate this award to all my little Greats, with a special mention to Tykrira Wilson, who stands with me on the cover of the album. I love them all very much. They are my future ancestors.” Another big congratulations to all the finalists who made the 2024 shortlist, this is a massive achievement. Well done 👏

APRA AMCOS commends the NSW Government for delivering its first Contemporary Music Strategy 2025–2034 since the establishment of the NSW music development office, Sound NSW. The delivery of this strategy aligns closely with the establishment of Music Australia by the Australian Government earlier this year, creating strong national and state-level foundations to advance the music sector. Together, these developments ensure a co-ordinated approach to supporting creators, fostering talent and positioning NSW as a leader in the national and global music landscape. Dean Ormston, Chief Executive APRA AMCOS says: "By addressing key challenges and opportunities, the strategy highlights the government’s commitment to building a thriving music ecosystem that benefits creators, audiences and communities alike. CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, representing over five million creators), has commissioned the first ever global study measuring the economic impact of AI in the music and audiovisual sectors. It calculates that Generative AI will enrich tech companies while substantially jeopardising the income of human creators in the next five years. One of the biggest festivals in the world, The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, announced its lineup last week! These Australian acts will be making an appearance and tearing up the stages over the two weekends in 2025. (April 11-13 and 18-20) Glass Beams, - Melbourne's very own music project from Indian-Australian multi-instrumentalist and producer Rajan Silva. Amyl and The Sniffers - From humble beginnings in Melbourne to now based in the US, everyone’s favourite pub rock/punk band! Parecls - The electropop five-piece originally from Byron Bay, now based in Berlin. Haai - Western Australian electronic producer and DJ, known for hypnotic beats and immersive soundscapes. Speed - Recent ARIA Award winners and hardcore punk band from Sydney. Huge shoutout to these incredible Aussie artists! Can’t wait to see them take on the desert and the Coachella stage!
