After two months away Archipelago has been delighted to welcome back Senior Urban Designer + Planner - Maia Cavendish. As a recipient of a Churchill Fellowship (thanks to Winston Churchill Trust (Australia)), Maia embarked on a self directed, 8 week international travel tour, exploring the implementation of informal urban art in residential urban spaces. Throughout her travels, Maia met with Government officers, planners, urban designers, academics and artists to understand the nuances of different cities' approaches to public art and how these approaches subsequently contribute to shaping community.   As a Senior Urban Designer + Planner at Archipelago Maia’s study directly informs her professional interests in the wide-reaching benefits of facilitating art in the public realm, particularly from a community perspective.   As part of her report Maia has composed a beautiful collage for each place she visited. First up: São Paulo + Rio de Janeiro [Brazil]. Image 01 Buenos Aires [Argentina]. Image 02 Philadelphia, Los Angeles + New York City [USA]. We are pleased to share news of the completion of our latest social housing project at Underwood, commissioned through Archipelago’s appointment to the Queensland Government Housing Design Excellence Panel. This suburban infill public housing project accommodates single bedroom dwellings on a highly constrained, sloping site in Underwood. With organisation of the residential address along a leafy central garden spine, the project successfully deprioritises the car, increases space for productive landscape species, and affords residents the choice to engage with their community or the opportunity for private retreat. Underwood Social Housing makes an important contribution to conversations around urban responsiveness and sustainability within Queensland’s housing portfolio. With thanks to Queensland Government QBuild Dept of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works and Chapcon Design & Construct To find out more about the project please visit our website via the link below, https://lnkd.in/g6qV3eNx

On Ekka-Day-Eve, our dedicated Archipelicans, along with colleagues and friends in the architecture community, braved a rainy cold night for the UQ Winter Sleepout to raise critical funds for the Second Chance Programme. Our heartfelt thank you to all those who gave generously in making a meaningful difference in the lives of women and children facing housing instability and homelessness. As a team, Archipelago has raised over $4,000 for the Second Chance Programme, contributing to the collective fundraising efforts just shy of $25,000! Second Chance Programme are a volunteer run charity working in Brisbane whose overheads are less than 1% (so $99 of your $100 donation go straight to those who need it!) and the funds raised get spread around a very large number of programs and shelters, providing targeted and practical support for a large number of beneficiaries. At Archipelago, we believe in social responsibility and community empowerment. Our participation in the Winter Sleepout for the last six years is more than an event—it reflects our core values and commitment to creating a better community. By supporting Second Chance, we’re contributing to a solution that has a real, tangible impact on the lives of women and children. It’s not too late to donate, the fundraising site is open for a few more days. Thank you for your generosity. Together, we can contribute to the well-being and empowerment of those who need it most. https://lnkd.in/gHFMTN63 Josh Spillane, Maia Cavendish, Danni'elle Jenkins

The last few years have really highlighted the challenges of housing affordability in Australia and the knock-on effect to housing stress and homelessness. There is a tangible impact we can all have by supporting organisations on the ground who help women and children escape domestic violence, deal with health issues or other circumstances beyond their control on to the pathway to safer and secure tenure housing. Sleepout for Homelessness 2024 is next Tuesday 13 August. Archipelago is committed to supporting our local communities through charitable efforts. For the past five years, we have been a proud supporter and participant of the Second Chance Programme and UQ School of Architecture Winter Sleepout, which raises money for practical interventions to support women and children on the path to housing security. If you are able to, please give generously to support this wonderful organisation who work in our community helping women and children living in our neighbourhoods. https://lnkd.in/gHFMTN63 #S4H2024 #uqwintersleepout #wintersleepout #donatenow #homelessnessactionnow

Archipelago was delighted to attend the Grand Opening of the Yeronga Community Centre last Thursday: Inspired by cues from the local Yeronga context, the Yeronga Community Centre is sensitively designed to create a sense of ‘home’ for a diverse range of users and activities. The building is the first step in the delivery of the broader Yeronga Heart precinct, which places the community as a central and core part of the master plan. We wish to thank all involved throughout both the design and delivery of this project including: Bryant Building Contractors for the collaborative and well-executed delivery of this pivotal piece of community infrastructure.  To both the Department of Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities and the Arts (formerly Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy) and Economic Development Queensland for driving and supporting our shared aspirations for this project And special thanks to Mel Hilditch and the Yeronga Community Centre team together with Bec Langdon MBA GAICD from Community Plus+ Queensland for your valuable input and engagement throughout the design process. #archipelago #architecture #urbandesign #landscapearchitecture #interiordesign

The Archipelago team would like to extend our congratulations to Peter Richards (Principal – Architecture + Urban Design) on his recent elevation to Life Fellow of the Queensland Chapter, Australian Institute of Architects.   Life Fellowship is the highest honour class of RAIA membership and is awarded to select members of the Institute having rendered notable contributions to the advancement of their profession.   Considering Peter’s experience across architecture, urban design, teaching and research, coupled with his strong advocacy for the value of freehand drawing, urban sketching and collaborative design processes, we think the recognition is very well deserved!   Well done Peter Richards and thank you Australian Institute of Architects. We are looking forward to supporting Peter at the President’s Honours Dinner tomorrow night.   #institutearchitectsqld #urbandesign #architecture

We are pleased to share that our new website, built and designed in collaboration with IGNITE® recently won several global web design awards across UX, UI and Innovation.
