Archibald-winning artist Julia Gutman will unveil her largest artwork to date at AGWA next week on Saturday, 5 October. 'life in the third person' is not only ambitious in scale, sitting at 15 x 3.3 metres, but it is also a material leap for the artist, who is known for stitching together donated garments to create narrative tableaux. This work is jacquard woven, a first for the artist, and composed on a 3-metre loom at Textiel Lab in the Netherlands. Gutman’s work has been described as “painting with fabric”, her 2023 Archibald Prize win represented an institutional acknowledgement of this expanded approach. Her work draws on motifs from historical painting to reflect on the interpersonal, projection, intimacy and the performance of selfhood. 'life in the third person' opens at AGWA on Saturday 5 October 2024. The exhibition will be officially launched at a special event with the artist on 25 October – the details of which will be rolled out soon. Congratulations to the winner of 'The West Australian Pulse 2024', Aaron Yong. His work 你回来了 (You are back), has received the most votes out of 60 works by 2023 Year 12 Visual Arts graduates from 36 schools across WA, and has won him the first prize of $2,500. Perth Modern School where he completed year 12, will also receive an AGWA workshop and tour package, and one lucky voter will win a $100 AGWA Design Store voucher. "你回来了(You are back) reflects the confusion and anxiety of living between two cultures. Becoming more fluent in English led to the fading of my nave language, Hakka. Now, my conversations in Hakka are short and fragmented. Losing my language parallels the vanishing memories of my childhood. The shattered depiction of Chinatown amid an industrial urban landscape symbolises this loss and fracture. The repetition of cultural and nostalgic objects creates a sense of chaos, conveying the stress of navigating my cultural heritage and the Western lifestyle. Originally detailed with graphite pencil, I then transitioned the drawing to a large-scale, colour print." There is still time to see Aaron's work as well as all the exceptional pieces by other young artists; The West Australian Pulse 2024 is open until October 6. If a physical visit to the gallery is not possible for you, you can tour the exhibition virtually online, watch videos and view the exhibition catalogue.
