As construction begins on the new Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway, The Hon. Jo Haylen visited the Sydney Studio with CHANNEL 7 TV Sarina Andaloro, to explore the project's key design elements and learn more about this transformative, city-shaping project.   From a new landing plaza in Bradfield Park, cyclists will soon be able to join the 200 metre-long and 3.1 metre-wide two-way dedicated cycle ramp across the bridge, enabling riders of all ages and abilities to safely link up with shared paths and cycleways on either side of the harbour.   Materials have been thoughtfully selected to honour the historical significance of the site and the heritage of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Granite for sections of the paving is sourced from Moruya on the NSW South Coast—the same granite used for the original Harbour Bridge pylons—seamlessly connecting the past with the present   The cycleway ramp is more than just infrastructure; it symbolises Sydney’s evolving approach to transport and its commitment to a sustainable future on a global scale. Just as the approaches to the Sydney Harbour Bridge have adapted over time—from the arrival and departure of trams to the construction of motorway on-ramps—this cycleway reflects where our city is heading: embracing active, sustainable travel and aligning with other global capitals placing cycling at the heart of urban mobility.   Congratulations to all our collaborators on this project milestone: Collins and Turner Architects (architects), Eckersley O'Callaghan (engineers), Design 5 Architects PTY Ltd. (heritage), Arenco NSW Pty Ltd (builder) and Transport for NSW.

The Ovingham Level Crossing Removal Project marries a major infrastructure project with a generous act of public realm design. With the elevation of the train line, the project has created space for enhanced connectivity across Adelaide’s inner north as well as revegetation and water-sensitive urban design measures that support extensive green infrastructure initiatives. Traditional Owner engagement was an integral part of the project with Kaurna culture and expression seamlessly integrated into the public realm to create a meaningful narrative for this significant new space. Key cultural elements are thoughtfully reflected in both integrated design elements and stand-alone sculptures. These features were developed through a collaborative co-design process with Kaurna representatives and cultural collaborators, ensuring an authentic and respectful cultural overlay across the site. Hosted by Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) SA, join Tim Conybeare, Adelaide Studio Director, and Corey Turner, Director of Aboriginal Urban Design, for an in-depth discussion exploring the design journey, the co-design process with cultural collaborators, and the outcomes that have contributed to this award-winning project. EVENT DETAILS When: Tuesday, 3 December 2024 Time: 12pm – 1pm Where: Online Webinar Register here: https://lnkd.in/gmtfXdXC

The new Kalgoorlie City Centre embodies our approach to creating spaces that enhance life in our cities and towns. The ASPECT Studios-led design team has won three awards at the 2024 Planning Institute of Australia WA Awards for Planning Excellence – the Planning Minister’s Award presented by John Carey MLA, Great Place Award and Regional Award – which recognises the way it supports daily life in Kalgoorlie. The new space emerges as a network of connected public spaces, fostering daily activities like social gatherings, play, outdoor dining, and entertainment. Inspired by the town’s distinct location and rich history, the design introduces bespoke elements that bridge its storied past with its evolving future. It’s really gratifying to have this recognition from our peers – congratulations to our colleagues for this achievement. Project collaborators: IPH Architects, Griffiths Architects, ETC Solutions, TABEC Civil Engineering Consultants, Terpkos Engineering, Cundall, RBB Economics, CADSUITE LIMITED, H+H Architects, Comply West, MNG, Lark Industries, Element Advisory and City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Photography: Peter Bennetts Traditional Owners: The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder recognises the Aboriginal People as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which Kalgoorlie-Boulder is situated.

The transformation of Seddon Street, Subiaco, has created a vibrant, pedestrian-focused community space that seamlessly connects to the town centre while offering the capacity to host events and various group activities. Designed to enhance public life, the project features improved seating areas, expanded alfresco dining options, upgraded pathways, and refreshed softscapes, with conserved treescapes and new underplanting. Enhancements to accessibility, drainage, and lighting ensure the space is both functional and inviting. Integrated artwork by VOXLAB, incorporating the area’s original railway line, adds a meaningful connection to the site’s rich history, giving the space both depth and character. Our Perth Studio recently visited Seddon Street, seeing firsthand how the space has come to life. Congratulations to our project partners City of Subiaco, Blackburne and BOS Civil.

Once a tired shopping center, Surry Hills Village in Sydney is now a lively and intimate destination. ASPECT's Global Design Director Sacha Coles and Adam Haddow of SJB joined Elizabeth Farrelly on The Sydneyist program to discuss that transformation. The mixed-use village hosts 122 apartments, wrapped around a central garden that connects to other retail spaces. The design fosters a sense of belonging—a town square where locals gather, connect, and "dwell". The project balances nostalgia, excitement, and renewal by maintaining essential elements like scale, texture, and materiality. Listen to the full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/gXEdWuUn Client: TOGA Project collaborators: SJB, Landscape Solutions, Mansour and First Nations artist Jake Nash.

The redevelopment will also provide a home for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Project collaborators: OMA, With_Architecture Studio, and Karrda

Earlier this year, the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) launched a competition to reimagine the Sculpture Garden as an innovative outdoor art gallery that honors the Australian landscape, the nation’s capital, and the NGA’s mission to make art accessible and meaningful for diverse audiences both locally and internationally. ASPECT Studios' Sydney team proposed a concept centered on a pathway that honours First Nations values. The design for the new sculpture garden features a circular storytelling route that invites visitors to connect deeply with the environment through water, mist, and native planting. Signature spaces, like a waterfront pavilion and vibrant seasonal gardens, foster moments for gathering and reflection. The concept celebrates Australia’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, bringing people and art together in an evolving landscape of connection and belonging. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to our collaborators: Smart Design Studio, Bernadette (B) Hardy, Craig Burton and Dave Pigram.

The Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal project stands as one of ASPECT’s most impactful initiatives, pioneering the idea that major infrastructure can also create high-quality public spaces that serve both the community and the environment. A recent post-occupancy study with Place Intelligence ® analysed mobile device location data to highlight the project’s success—not just as a transit corridor, but as a lively destination. Visitors are actively engaging with the parks, seating areas, and activity zones, demonstrating the space’s multifunctional value. Evaluating past projects is vital for gaining insights into how these spaces can shape and sustain communities. Read more about the study and project design here: https://lnkd.in/gmPxcZA7
