  • We all know we need more housing. Working with PropCode, we've done a deep dive on how some of the planning reforms in NSW to increase supply are tracking to support meeting our housing crisis. When we looked into dual occupancy dwellings we found that since the introduction in July 2024, only 7 development applications were submitted in areas where dual occupancies were previously prohibited. To realise the potential of dual occupancy and accelerate housing, we think reforms could be further supported through: 💡 Reviewing how local planning controls interact with the reforms to ensure alignment and reduce barriers 💡 Increasing awareness of the various approval pathways available to developers and property owners 💡 Simplifying the process of determining whether a site is suitable for this housing typology Read our findings in our research snapshot here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gXjfuUQu #nswplanning #housing #housingreform #housingsupply

  • Today we hosted the Central NSW Joint Organisation, Hunter Joint Organisation, Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation and the NSW Reconstruction Authority to share key lessons and take aways from the California Economic Summit hosted by California Forward in Sacramento, October 2024. Our top 4 take aways 📢 Prioritising regions - Strong working relationships across geographies and sectors are more resilient during periods of change and transition, and are more successful at leveraging new opportunities  📢 Planning in a changing climate - Living in climate instability requires a focus on climate literacy and the need to prepare for a range of plausible futures 📢 Infrastructure networks - Our approach to renewing and building infrastructure must address how we can 'do more with less', and how we retrofit existing network to cater to a system that it was not designed for 📢 Inclusive economic development - Working across sectors to maximise the benefits of development and renewal and uplift the most disadvantaged communities Reflecting on our learnings with our regional networks reinforced that a collaborative approach to working together is the key to building resilience and creating a stronger future.   It was a great discussion, led by Amanda Yeung and Atiqah Alias. Points around the room included the power of working as a regional network and a framework for understanding the unique ecosystem, assets, and priorities of each region. We agreed that the community needs to be at the forefront and shared ways to strengthen relationships with and the role of the not-for-profit sector to deliver community benefits through every project. • Yesterday Belinda Comninos from Astrolabe Group and Faith Halliday from StratWest brought together a collective of amazing women from all different industries but who are connected through their passionate work towards making great places. Special shout out to Dr Rhonda Itaoui, PhD from the Centre for Western Sydney for sharing insights on women's labour participation in Western Sydney and how place-based initiatives are required to tackle the challenges of participation, even down to the postcode. Highlights of the discussion included: ➡ the need for strategic planning to ensure places are connected and that social infrastructure is accessible, ➡the challenges of accessing childcare particularly where 'childcare deserts' exist, and ➡the benefits that could be realised not just for women but the broader economy if we reduced the participation gap. 📑 You can read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gxxJijS9

  • 🎤 Our Director's were out this week speaking at industry events focused on planning and place. 👏👏 Belinda Comninos moderated a panel at Connect Macquarie Park Innovation District's Summit bringing industry leaders, government officials, researchers, and innovators to explore the future of Macquarie Park as central to Australia’s innovation landscape. Recognising the importance of place in attracting talent and driving innovation she led a conversation on what investors, start ups, scale ups and business are looking for in commercial space, including: ▪ districts play an important role to enable collaboration in creating vibrant, innovative spaces - the brand of a place and experience of current tenants helps growth of districts as a whole. ▪ Need for flexibility in permissible use of space to enable business to grow in place - it is expensive to move and flexibility can be the difference between a scale and failure Michael Comninos spoke at UDIA NSW State Conference on the panel Foundation Blocks – Getting Enabling Infrastructure Right. The panel discussed a number of topics including: ▪ The processes used to identify priority areas where infrastructure is needed to unlock growth. ▪ What continuous improvement can be implemented and the biggest opportunities to better align the required infrastructure with planning to ensure housing demand is met. 🙌 Great to spend time with change makers who are delivering for people and place 🙌 #innovation #planning #placemaking #housing #infrastructure #collaboration

  • Tallawong Village is a major residential development in north west Sydney, adjacent to Tallawong Metro Station - delivering housing close to transport and amenity. We've been working with Deicorp to complete an independent analysis of the economic, social and environmental benefits of the 987-unit Tallawong Village project. While the the benefits to delivering housing - a critical issue for communities is clear - we also demonstrated how residential development drives economic activities and has direct and flow-on effects in other parts of the economy. The analysis showed that projects such as these have deep, important and ongoing benefits for NSW. The analysis also demonstrated how difficult feasibility of developments are currently, providing some clear evidence to government and stakeholders to consider in the urgency to supply affordable and well-located housing for people. ➡ Hop on the Sydney Metro and check out Tallawong Village 🚇 and congratulations to the team at Deicorp for their design and delivery 👏 #econonmicanalysis #economicimpact #socialimpact
