About us

OUR VISION A disability confident Australia. OUR PURPOSE To build employer capability and be the employer voice to government, industry and community to achieve the inclusion of people with disability. OUR VALUES Collaborative - We actively participate, we actively listen, and we proactively seek out and share information. Open - We have courageous conversations, say when we need help and communicate authentically and respectfully. Flexible - We explore new ways of doing things, we learn from experience, and we adapt to changing circumstances. Ambitious - We celebrate successes, demonstrate respect, accessibility and inclusion at all times and we actively strive to maximise AND’s impact. The Australian Disability Network (ADN) is a not for profit organisation funded by its members to take a leadership role in advancing the equitable inclusion of people with disability in all aspects of business. We assist our members to reap the business benefits of employing people with disability, and welcoming customers with disability. We are not an employment agency and do not find jobs for people with disability - we work on the employer-side to improve internal systems and procedures to ensure they are accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities. Approximately 20% of the Australian population has a disability - that's one in every five people in Australia. Ensuring your organisation is disability confident isn't just the "right thing to do" - it also makes very good business sense. Through the delivery of unique products and services, we assist organisations to build skills and confidence in relation to people with disability as employees, customers and other stakeholders. Disability inclusion makes good business sense. This is evident from our own success. We came 2nd in the 2023 AFR BOSS Best Places to Work list - Government, Education and Not-for-Profit category.

Inclusive Attitudes build a truly accessible workplace that values diverse experiences and fosters a culture of respect!    In the lead up to International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on Dec 3, we're sharing three tips to ensure you are choosing inclusion and creating a more welcoming environment and unlocking the potential of all employees:    Tip 1: Challenge the stereotypes! Don’t let unconscious bias cloud your judgement. Focus on a person’s abilities rather than perceived limitations.  Tip 2: Building disability confidence is a significant factor to break down barriers. Provide disability awareness training to employees, include information on visible and non-visible disabilities and encourage growth in confidence by mentoring people with disability.  Tip 3: Choose language that respects and empowers. Respect individual preferences; some people prefer identity-first language (e.g., “disabled person”) while others prefer person-first language (e.g., “person with disability”).    Download the full '10 Tips for Inclusive Attitudes’ resource and more on our webpage: https://lnkd.in/gcShiDc7    Want to lock in a Disability Confidence Training session with us? Over the last 10 years, I've learnt alot from working in organisations that were members of Australian Disability Network.   Whether that was: 🔺 IBM taking part in the PACE mentoring initiative and Access and Inclusion Index 🔺 Thoughtworks completing the Recruitment Review, or 🔺 The ODPP participating in the 'Stepping Into' Internship and leveraging AusDN's expertise as we develop our Workplace Adjustment policy. All of these experiences have built my disability confidence/literacy and underscored the importance of accessibility.    It's been a real treat, therefore, to hone in the knowledge gained, and to develop and facilitate workplace adjustment information sessions at the ODPP. Next month, I will be going onto delivering our fourth Workplace Adjustment Information Session alongside our Wellbeing and Safety Coordinator.   What I've enjoyed most throughout this process has been the conversations that we've been able to have with managers and staff about how adjustments play out in practice e.g.: ▪ adjustments in the office and adjustments in the courtroom, ▪ adjustments in the recruitment process, ▪ adjustments that are ergonomic or specialised, etc.   It's been clear that adjustments are so unique to each individual and that it would be impossible to know of all the possibilities. But what I've come to value is that the 'secret sauce' for us has been the DEI and Wellbeing and Safety forces coming together. It amplifies our awareness-raising efforts and gets us a little bit closer to our goal of normalising adjustment conversations.

  • Workplace adjustments are essential for creating an inclusive environment where all employees can thrive! In the lead up to International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on Dec 3, we're sharing three tips to ensure you are providing people with disability the right tools and support to perform their roles effectively: Tip 1: Streamline the process! Implement a centralised workplace adjustments process that is simple and appoint a designated workplace adjustments officer to coordinate requests. Tip 2: Empower your managers by providing disability confidence training and resources for all line managers. Be sure to offer ongoing support! Tip 3: Listen and build trust. Actively listen and believe employees when they ask for adjustments and avoid interrogation. Foster a safe environment by encouraging open dialogue about workplace needs and challenges.
