Sustainably Caught, Carbon Neutral Seafood For Good 🌏

About us

Austral Fisheries is one of Australia’s largest integrated commercial fishing companies with interests in both deep-sea fishing and at-sea prawning.  We are proud to be recognised for our responsible fishing practices and continuous efforts to maintain our environmentally conscious, sustainable fishing methods. All of the Commonwealth-managed fisheries we operate in are independently certified as sustainable and well managed by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). In 2016, Austral also became the first seafood business in the world to be certified as carbon neutral under the Australian Government's 'Climate Active' Carbon Neutral Program. Austral Fisheries’ deep-sea fishing activities involve the operation of 3 longline vessels, including a dual-purpose longline-trawl vessel. Each of these vessels is equipped to survive the world’s harshest weather conditions as experienced in Australia’s sub-Antarctic zones. These vessels specialise in catching Patagonian Toothfish and Mackerel Icefish. Austral Fisheries’ prawning component involves the operation of a fleet of 11 prawn trawlers in the Northern Prawn Fishery off the coast of northern Australia catching Banana, Tiger and Endeavour Prawns.  The fishery was established in the late 1960s and is Australia’s most valuable fishery managed by the Australian Commonwealth Government. Austral's operation out of Darwin was established in 2017 via investment in the Timor Reef Fishery. This fishery operates in the remote offshore waters of the Northern Territory. Here we are growing towards operating four trap-fishing vessels, primarily targeting Goldband Snapper, Saddletail Snapper, Red Emperor and Mixed Cod species.

Well it has finally happened. Aussie customers can now buy our amazing Skull Island Tiger prawns direct from the producer (that’s us at Austral!). This ad is now ‘in the wild’ and running in the Qantas October edition of the in-flight mag. A perfect and simple way to get your Christmas prawns delivered to your home. Visit www.skullisland.com.au For us at Austral this represents another step in the evolution of the business. From the early days of being an anonymous commodity producer at the whim of the market to a consumer facing organisation with a story to tell about the challenges and choices that we make to bring a premium, independently certified (MSC), carbon neutral product to discerning Australian consumers. Kudos to the whole Austral team with special shout out to Dylan Skinns for his single minded and obsessive approach to bringing this to life.

Well, this proved to be a bit of a shock... We had a crack at taking out the Agribusiness award and fell short to a terrific win from Craig Mostyn Group and then jagged the Environment award which is more likely our happy place to be honest (but never taken for granted) and then just as we were starting to enjoy the red wine we learned that we were winner of the 'WA Exporter of the Year'. Total shock coz there was such a worthy line up of category winners who were equally or more deserving of this recognition. Thanks to WA Govt Invest and Trade team, to sponsors, finalists and category winners for a memorable night. An important thanks also to the 'Austral ecosystem' of crew and staff and board and customers and suppliers for the work you do - day in day out - to provide millions of people each year with natures' perfect protein. It's now onto Canberra in November for the National celebration of Australian creativity and drive and entrepreneurship.

🎉🏆 WA Export Awards 2024 🐟 🦐 Last night Austral Fisheries were announced as winners of the Sustainability & Green Economy category and West Australian Exporter of the Year. A big thank you to our crews at sea and on shore for all their hard work and commitment to 'feeding the people'. When asked how we get our Karumba Banana prawns to stay still enough to be traced using block chain technology, David replied "You basically get them together into a 3kg carton, freeze them... and put the code on that." Quite simple really when you think about it! #WAExportAwards #WAExportAwards2024 #WAExport #InvestAndTradeWA #WesternAustralia #LikeNoOtherWA

🐟 Seafood Directions 2024 🦐 Last week, Team Austral traveled to Hobart for an engaging few days focused on the Future of Seafood. Here are some key moments: Bryan and David took the stage on their respective panels, offering their expertise on the future of fishing and the seafood industry. The team had the pleasure of hearing @thelucybloom speak at the @womeninseafood_australasia Power Up breakfast. Lucy’s inspiring journey and dynamic storytelling captivated the entire room. Congratulations to @womeninseafood_australasia bursary recipient Ashley, who had a fantastic experience networking and learning from remarkable women in the seafood sector. We also showcased our virtual reality prawn trawling experience, thanks to @seafoodindustryaustralia Seafood Careers for allowing us to take over their stand at various times during the conference. This was a great chance to share with others across the seafood industry what we do. To top it all off, we’re thrilled to share that we won the National Seafood Industry Award for People & Development, sponsored by @salmontasmania. This accolade recognises our Austral Academy and its mission to educate people about career pathways in the fishing industry. We'd like to congratulate @humptydoobarramundi and @camerons_oysters who were also finalists in the category, only together will we be able to raise the profile about careers in the seafood industry and build our future workforce. A huge THANK YOU to all our staff, crew, and partners who have contributed to making the Academy a success! Now it's time to rest up before we head to the 2024 WA Export Awards on Thursday! #seafooddirections2024 #seafoodcareers

To celebrate National Science Week, we would like to share some of the sustainable practices and innovation behind a fishery we operate in - the Northern Prawn Fishery. 🔬 Our vessels are currently conducting crucial research on unintended catches of larger sharks and stingrays with the use of innovative by-catch reduction devices. This ongoing research highlights the fishery's dedication to protecting threatened, endangered and protected species while maintaining a steady supply of quality wild-caught prawns for Australians. 🍤 Prawns are considered one of the most sustainable seafood options due to their short life cycles and resilient biology. Typically maturing within 12 months, their robustness means that well-regulated fisheries can thrive without depleting prawn stocks, and therefore securing a steady supply for future generations. 🌳 We recognise the critical implications of climate change on the Northern Prawn Fishery. That's why we emphasise the importance of understanding how environmental shifts and changing ocean conditions affect marine ecosystems and climate action. We took the leap in 2016 by becoming one of the world's first carbon-neutral fishing companies, offsetting Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions through initiatives like reforestation projects. #NationalScienceWeek #Sustainability #innovation
