The Summit featured Australia's Chief Scientist, Dr. Cathy Foley AO, alongside national leaders in science and innovation. We are delighted to be working with the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and the community on the development of the Australian National Persistent Identity (PID) Strategy and Roadmap. This is an opportunity to strengthen Australia's digital information ecosystem with a national approach to tracking research impact, and supporting research integrity and innovation. In 2022, the Australian Access Federation (AAF) and the ARDC commissioned an analysis into incentives for the adoption of PIDs by the Australian research sector. By implementing PIDs for people, datasets and instruments, research facilities can help identify strengths and weaknesses in research capabilities and reduce administrative burden on researchers. The report also found that PIDs can: > reduce time: the total time manually rekeying metadata is 38,000 days per year > reduce cost: the total cost of this manual rekeying is $24 million per year > reduce effort: administrative tasks make up the bulk (30-40%) of the researchers’ time that is wasted. The ARDC is now gathering Stakeholder Action Groups to enable the Australian National PID Strategy and to contribute to the National Collaborative Roadmap. The AAF is a member of these Action Groups and provides advice and input into the development and implementation of the Strategy and Roadmap. We look forward to continuing our collaborative work within the Stakeholder Action Groups to ensure the successful implementation of ORCID and PIDs in the community. AAF recently attended eResearch Australasia 2024 for an informative week, discussing the latest developments from our Trust and Identity Pathfinder incubators, cybersecurity for the sector, measuring and communicating the impact of research infrastructure, and building trust through multi-factor authentication. 🌟 Thank you to our colleagues at ANSTO for the opportunity to tour the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne. The Australian Synchrotron produces a suite of x-ray and infra-red beamlines for a wide range of applications across health, medical, food, environment, energy and more. The powerful beams of light allow researchers to examine the molecular and atomic details of a wide range of materials, and allow for a greater level of detail that can be seen and collected compared to traditional experiment methods. #NCRIS #NCRISImpact

The National Imaging Facility (NIF) is Australia’s advanced imaging network, and provides access to imaging equipment, expertise, tools, data, and analysis. The Australian Access Federation (AAF) is collaborating with NIF to explore improved access and collaboration for complex multi-site human imaging projects and medical trials using sensitive data. Peter Bugeia, National Coordinator - Data at NIF, says, "Through a co-designed trust and identity solution, NIF's partners, institutional researchers, and external users will be able to access sensitive data and collaborate more securely and effortlessly." AAF has partnered with the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) to develop a trust and identity reference architecture. The incubator project will enable consistent application of the technology and policy components of the Trust and Identity (T&I) Framework for research collaborations. AAF are collaborating with ARDC through the Trust and Identity Pathfinder program, funded by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (#NCRIS). This incubator will test the entirety of the Framework and uplift the interoperability of ARDC’s Nectar Research Cloud. The incubator will ensure the trust and identity policies and technologies are reusable across ARDC’s Thematic Research Data Commons, to support researchers across distributed infrastructures and research communities.
