Securing the Future of Regional Air Services Finding a suitable buyer for Rex Airlines remains a key priority, ensuring continued air connectivity for regional and rural communities. The Australian Airports Association (AAA) remains hopeful that a market-led sale can provide certainty for those who rely on these vital services. Additional support from the Albanese Government to assist administrators could help achieve this outcome and is welcomed as part of ongoing negotiations. At the same time, further details are needed on how the airline would operate under any potential Commonwealth ownership. “For more than six months, regional residents have faced uncertainty about losing access to major cities — affecting their ability to visit family, access healthcare, and pursue business opportunities,” said AAA CEO Simon Westaway. AAA continues to advocate for sustainable regional air services, emphasising the need for collaboration between government and industry to secure long-term solutions. Many regional airports have taken on significant financial burdens to support air connectivity, and ongoing support is essential to maintain these critical services. A competitive aviation sector benefits all Australians, driving down airfares and improving accessibility for regional communities. Ensuring a strong future for regional air travel must remain a shared priority. ✈️ A better border experience starts with smarter investment. Australian airports are committed to making air travel as seamless as possible, but international passengers have been facing long queues and complicated passport processing systems. As Australian Airports Association (AAA) CEO Simon Westaway told The Sydney Morning Herald, this is an “important moment” for Australia to step up and become a global leader in border efficiency. That’s why the AAA is calling for smarter investment of the Passenger Movement Charge (PMC) to modernise border technology by fully digitising incoming passenger cards, expanding self-service kiosks, and increasing the use of biometrics and SmartGates for Australian Border Force. We believe an extra 5% of PMC revenue annually should be allocated to critical upgrades at our major international gateways. This will help fix today’s delays while building a future-ready border experience. 🌏 Singapore’s Changi Airport and Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport are great examples—where advanced biometrics keep passengers moving effortlessly. With the right investment, Australia can deliver a world-class experience too. Our airports are already investing billions of dollars in infrastructure to accommodate the 53 million international passenger movements expected annually in Australia by 2030. But parallel government investment in smarter border technologies is needed to ensure passengers get the seamless experience they deserve. #Aviation #Airports #AustralianAirports #BorderSecurity #Borders #SmartTravel #PassengerExperience #AustralianAirports #Travel #TravelandTourism #VisitorEconomy #Election2025 #auspol

Regional airports are a lifeline for many communities and provide essential access to healthcare, education, business, and social connections. The Australian Airports Association welcomes the decision by the Albanese Government to invest $2.68 million in Flinders Island Airport to ensure reliable air services are maintained. This funding will enable upgrades to WWII-era electrical infrastructure and runway lighting and allow the airport to continue facilitating night landings. Investment in critical airport infrastructure is vital to keep Australia’s regional, rural and remote areas connected. It’s why the AAA has called for an ongoing commitment of $50 million per year to the Regional Airport Program and Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program, with expanded eligibility criteria to enable airports to prioritise funding for the most urgent needs.
