We won’t give up until Australia’s nature is protected and regenerated. Nature needs us, now.

About us

We’re the Australian Conservation Foundation, Australia’s national environment organisation. Since 1965, we’ve protected the nature we all love – our unique wildlife and our beautiful beaches and bush. Driven by the power of people, we won World Heritage listing for the Great Barrier Reef and Kakadu National Park, and returned precious water to the rivers of the Murray-Darling. We influence governments and businesses to protect the animals, rivers and reefs close to our hearts and hold decision-makers to account without fear or favour. Everything we do is evidence-based and helps nature and people thrive for generations to come. We won’t give up until Australia’s nature is protected and regenerated. Nature needs us, now. • Today is the perfect time to slow down and celebrate the breathtaking beauty of our big backyard. Whether you're relaxing, sharing moments with loved ones, or enjoying a festive feast, take a moment to reflect on how precious our natural world truly is. From the iconic Great Barrier Reef to the magnificent Tarkine forest, every corner of nature deserves our care and protection. Thank you for your incredible support this year. Together, we're creating a future where nature and people thrive. There's still so much to achieve—see you next year!

  • Our thoughts are with the frontline workers battling the fires in the Gariwerd (Grampian) National Park today. This week, Australia has faced raging fires in Victoria, flash flooding in Far North Queensland, and snow in parts of NSW and Tasmania—clear signs of the climate crisis. Burning coal and gas is fueling more extreme weather, stretching communities and first responders to their limits. We need leaders to act now: stop fanning the flames, cut climate pollution, and commit to a safer, more stable future.

  • CFA captain Steve Field says Christmas has been "put on hold" across parts of Victoria as fire crews and communities prepare for worsening conditions in the current unsafe heatwave. Firefighters are continuing to battle three main fires across the state at the Grampians National Park, The Gurdies and Bullengarook. Fire danger is expected to escalate on Boxing Day, with temperatures forecast to climb significantly and with the northerly blowing, Mr Field and his team hope that their containment lines and back burning will work. Our big backyard is at breaking point. Scorching heat. Catastrophic bushfires. Wildlife and communities not having time to recover before the next disaster strikes. This is climate destruction, fuelled by gas and coal companies, and it’s getting worse. Learn more: https://acf.to/4iOM2xp

  • Labor has approved an extension of Woodside’s North West Shelf Project until 2070 – a decision that risks devastating climate, nature, and culture. Scott Reef, an ecologically significant marine wonder. Murujuga rock art, including the first recorded image of a human face, dating back at least 50,000 years. Our climate, already under immense pressure. All of this is at risk. Murujuga Traditional Owners have raised concerns, and the project’s environmental impact has led to a Senate Inquiry. Worse still, the proposal could pave the way for fracking in the pristine Kimberley region. Take action now. Write to the Environment Minister and Prime Minister, urging them to protect our nature, culture, and climate. Every voice matters. Send your letter today: https://lnkd.in/gvCUt-33

  • Independent scientific experts have raised serious concerns about gas fracking in the NT's Beetaloo Basin. Despite claims that impacts on water would be 'minor,' their report highlights long-term risks, including cumulative damage to groundwater, climate, and ecosystems. We’re calling on Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek to use her expanded water trigger powers to assess NT fracking proposals properly. Fracking's incremental expansion risks irreversible harm to water resources already under pressure. Traditional Owners have fought for decades to protect Country, water, and culture from fracking. It’s time to listen.

  • Is anyone else joining the dots? Approving coal mines isn’t climate action – it’s climate destruction. Coal is driving the climate crisis, making bushfires, heatwaves, and floods more frequent and severe. The Albanese Government is trying to have it both ways – supporting renewables while greenlighting major coal mine expansions. But the reality is clear: these approvals will leave Australians and our precious environment facing the devastating impacts of a worsening climate. Send a clear message to the Prime Minister. STOP APPROVING NEW COAL: https://acf.to/4gJ4nKF

  • Large-scale renewable energy projects are estimated to deliver $1 billion to farmers and $200 million to regional communities by 2030, according to a recent report by the Clean Energy Council and Farmers for Climate Action. The report shows farmers can earn $38,500 to $45,500 per year from hosting a typical 7MW turbine and up to $1,250 per hectare from solar. For comparison, a beef farmer can expect returns of $1,500 per hectare per year in a good year. Now consider this: $331 billion. That’s the staggering price tag of Peter Dutton’s nuclear energy plan. We could install solar panels on every Aussie home for a fraction of that cost! Here’s the truth: Nuclear doesn’t add up for Australia. Read the full report: https://acf.to/4gK78v1

  • Exposed: ACF’s crowdsourced investigation program has revealed potentially illegal bulldozing of critically endangered bushland in the Hunter Valley. Nine hectares of woodland—home to koalas, swift parrots, and gang-gang cockatoos—have been destroyed without evidence of required Commonwealth approval. When you raised the alarm, we acted—deploying ACF investigators to uncover the truth. Thanks to your efforts, the next two stages of this development have been paused. Now it’s time for the developers to abandon their plans to clear an additional 28 hectares, and the Albanese Government must urgently strengthen our nature laws and establish an EPA in 2025. Together this year, ACF’s crowdsourced investigations have uncovered 22 more cases of suspected illegal clearing, now being reported to federal and state authorities. Stay tuned—there’s more to come.
