  • At the 2025 VBHC Congress, join us for a panel discussion exploring connections beyond health care, including justice, education and the environment, the global movement of social prescribing and the influence of hospitals and health services on employment, local industry and public interest media. Hospitals and health services are substantial assets in prosperous communities – their role goes beyond the provision of health care, serving as anchors for community health and equity, building resilience within their communities and positively influencing the social, economic and environmental conditions. But how do we ensure our systems and structures don’t risk over-medicalising health, placing greater focus on treatment rather than prevention? Dr Candice Oster, Research Fellow in the Flinders Caring Futures Institute, Flinders University, will be joining us for this Panel. Candice will bring insights from her current research projects developing sustainable models and mechanisms of social prescribing to address social determinants of health. • Join us at the 2025 VBHC Congress for a panel discussion exploring ‘The pain of change – Well-managed disinvestment in service improvement and system sustainability’. Complementary to driving high value care is well-managed disinvestment in low value care. Both are necessary in service improvement and system sustainability. There are broad-ranging activities in the health system that can be considered low value. This includes those diagnostics that may cause harm but have no influence on approaches to treatment; surgical interventions that are not only ineffective but can worsen outcomes; antibiotics for viral infections; and providing care in the hospital when better outcomes can be achieved in the community. Each requires consideration of different factors, and strategies for de-implementation can be challenging. This makes it everyone’s business. There are significant opportunities to remove low value care and doing so has broad-ranging benefits – for patient outcomes and experiences, financial sustainability, environmental impact and connecting the workforce with the care they know is more meaningful. If you were at the last VBHC Congress, you’ll remember The Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation (AusHSI) sharing their toolkit for identifying and addressing low value care. This panel will be facilitated by Prof Harriet Hiscock, University of Melbourne - against her research background that focuses on developing, testing and implementing new approaches to keep children out of hospital; reducing low-value (wasteful) care; and integrating health, social and education services to improve health and wellbeing for children, including those living with family adversity. • At the 2025 VBHC Congress, join us for a panel discussion exploring aligning incentives through funding and pricing. Funding structures and models are often identified as one factor preventing the health system from delivering care to achieve the best health outcomes, efficiently and equitably. The way we fund influences the capacity for innovation, opportunities to rid the system of low value care, and for consumers, it impacts choice and out-of-pocket expenses. Incentives don’t just need to align in the way we remunerate different professions or between the primary and hospital sectors, but also across the private and public systems, across health, aged and disability care, and federal and state/territory policies. Consumers, services and the system all need strategies to support informed-decision making around value. Join Dr Rachel David and other panelists as they discuss how the system aligns incentives for value. Rachel is CEO of Private Healthcare Australia. A medical doctor who started her career working in public and private hospitals, she now undertakes high stakes negotiations between governments and commercial players in the healthcare sector. With a keen focus on ensuring the health insurance sector plays its role as a leader driving transformation of Australian health care to better serve the needs of the consumer, she is a strong advocate for how the system must come together in removing low-value care and investing in high value care, navigating complex regulatory and stakeholder environments. • AHHA has welcomed the federal government’s Medicare funding announcement of $8.5 billion, but for this investment to provide the greatest benefit for Australians, the focus must be on delivering value over volume. To achieve what matters to Australians with this investment, we must ensure it drives improved health outcomes and quality of care, and this requires collaboration across our health system. We need to be open to innovative approaches that are focused on outcomes, embracing the potential that team-based care or technology can bring and connecting services across the health and social care systems.
