About us

Founded in 1997, the Australian Fisheries Academy was established as an industry managed education centre for the maritime, fishing and seafood industries. It is now recognised as a leader in the provision of maritime, fishing and seafood industry-based education and development programs in Australia. In 2011, the Australian Fisheries Academy included maritime in its trading name to become the Australian Maritime & Fisheries Academy (AMFA). The new name reflects the increased number of students, courses and demand the maritime sector has experienced in the last few years. AMFA students now have wider career options than ever before, with the oil and gas sectors of the resources industry becoming a large utiliser of skilled maritime workers. AMFA is the only industry owned and operated maritime, seafood and fishing industry development and training organisation in the Southern Hemisphere. Its role is to provide education, management, advisory and support services in all maritime and fisheries related development and training areas. Offering a broad range of nationally accredited training programs and short courses, the Australian Maritime & Fisheries Academy is continuously developing and customising its wide range of education programs to meet industry specific requirements. The Academy's programs are designed to deliver learning outcomes that are effective, ensuring practicality and relevance to the maritime, fishing and seafood industries. AMFA is recognised as a leader in Australia and the Asia Pacific region for innovative, focussed and relevant fisheries advisory, management and training services that are client driven.

Safety Training: An Oxymoron No More Safety is beyond theory or knowledge; it is a mindset. Experience alters mindsets. Hence, "Safety training" has long seemed like an oxymoron in the maritime industry. Our seafarers undergo various STCW training and modules to prepare for dangerous situations, but only through lifeless PowerPoint presentations in classroom settings. This "training" checks a box but does little to impart real-world knowledge.   However, with new technologies like augmented and virtual reality, we can revolutionize maritime training. We can transport seafarers into simulations where they obtain first-hand safety experience from the comfort of a VR headset. Understanding mooring procedures becomes clearer when you feel like you're on deck dealing with high-tension ropes. Communicating during emergencies becomes easier when you realistically stare down simulator smoke and flames.    Technologies like Apple Vision and Meta Quest 3 will allow us to train seafarers comprehensively for a fraction of traditional costs. Fancy bridge simulators are no longer needed when we can link crew members from four different continents in a collaborative VR environment. And learning the Rules of the Road is more effective when you watch theoretical concepts play out in augmented reality.    Maritime training should focus on engagement and understanding, not rote memorization. The next generation of seafarers expects deeper learning through technology. Regulatory bodies like IMO should spearhead sweeping changes, encouraging the industry at large to integrate tech-centred training programs. We owe it to maritime professionals across the world to utilize technologies readily available to us.    The time has come to break free of antiquated PowerPoint lectures. A new era for maritime training is upon us. By leaning into tech-focused simulations, we can thoroughly prepare seafarers for the harsh realities of life at sea. Most importantly, innovative training will empower crews with the knowledge to not just survive but thrive safely under pressure. The technology is here - all we need is the conviction to dramatically transform maritime training for the modern age.
