During October 2024, there were 95 reported incidents involving domestic commercial vessels. Of these, 20 were serious. These reports help us improve maritime safety for everybody on the water. 📅 Incidents are shared monthly. The information shared is broken down by where the vessel was operating and vessel type, and descriptions of the incidents are provided. 🚨Out now! The updated Surveyor Accreditation Guidance Manual Part 2 (SAGM2) is now available! SAGM2 sets the standards and criteria for surveying domestic commercial vessels, ensuring Accredited Marine Surveyors and recognised organisations align with AMSA’s regulatory and policy objectives. In February 2024, we asked for your feedback on the proposed changes, and your feedback has helped shape the new SAGM2. Key changes include: - Increased Flexibility for Survey Cycles - Simplification of Dual 2/4 Class Certification for Leisure-Type Vessels - Streamlined EX40 Survey Criteria. This month’s safety lesson focuses on ensuring risk assessments consider the ways in which injuries may occur in the operation of a vessel. It highlights a marine incident that involved a crew member sustaining a crush injury during line handling. The safety management system for the operation did not identify risks associated with line handling, such as crushing injuries. 📅 Every month, we share a safety lesson you can learn to ensure safe operations on board your vessel. 🏆 Congratulations to Captain Philip Holliday, Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW). Philip received the Seafarers Welfare Award at the DCN - Daily Cargo News 2024 Australian Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards on Thursday 21 November. The Seafarers Welfare Award acknowledges individuals in the Australian shipping industry who make it their priority to ensure seafarers’ needs are met. We proudly sponsored the Award again this year, with AMSA’s Wayne Cooper, Manager Operations South, presenting Philip his award. Philip spearheaded the creation of the Seafarer Welfare Fund – a joint initiative between the Port Authority of NSW, NSW Ports and the Port of Newcastle. The 2.5-million-dollar fund alleviates administrative burdens on welfare charities, enabling them to focus on essential services such as healthcare and mental health resources. Philip is also a strong advocate for the rights of seafarers. His commitment to supporting those vital to our global supply chains showcases true excellence in the maritime industry.
