To advance the scientific understanding of the atmosphere, oceans and climate system to the benefit of all Australians.
About us
AMOS is an independent Australian society that supports and fosters interest in meteorology, oceanography and other related sciences, providing a forum for people with a common interest, and by publishing relevant material. The Society helps all those with an interest in the environment including research workers and professionals, those whose work is affected by, and affects, the atmosphere and oceans, and those who simply want to keep up with new findings.

In the latest Bulletin of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, I am looking back at what I consider an extremely successful Elizabeth and Frederick White Conference on Atmospheric Dynamics, supported by The Australian Academy of Science, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, the The ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather, and ACCESS-NRI. This was a great opportunity to bring together an Australian research community specifically around atmospheric dynamics, and connect to global research efforts via international invited speakers. I think it is important to build a dynamics community in Australia, and this conference has provided an invaluable stepping stone get this going. Many thanks to the various organisations supporting this adventure - I am very much looking forward to where this is going. Below the relevant pages, but do read the entire Bulletin as it is always worth a read at https://lnkd.in/ge5U8GDg

Danielle Udy and I wrote a piece for the Bulletin of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society about how recent storm surge in Melbourne offers a glimpse into the future "new normal". Whilst the multi-day storm surge in late August and early September was associated with unusual weather patterns, with future sea level rise the impacts observed will happen much more often, without needing severe weather events to occur. We’re thrilled the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society has awarded the 2024 Meyers Medal to one of our #Antarctic oceanographers Edward Doddridge. Thanks AMOS and congratulations Ed! “Edward’s work has advanced our understanding of ocean and climate processes in fundamentally important ways. His research combines analytical theory, numerical modelling, and observational analyses. He combines this broad range of approaches to address fundamental questions about ocean circulation and ocean-sea ice processes. His recent publications on Antarctic sea ice are strong examples of the timely and influential nature of his work. In addition to leading his own research, Edward co-chairs the Consortium for Ocean-Sea Ice Modelling in Australia (COSIMA) and supervises the research of three PhD students and a post-doc.” https://lnkd.in/gVQPTW35
