As 2024 comes to a close, so does my term as President of the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR). It has been an honour and a privilege to lead this incredible organisation during a year of significant progress and transformation. This year, ASMR has embraced change through an ambitious business transformation to better serve our members and amplify our impact. Some key achievements include: · Undergoing a strategic review and developing a 5 year strategic plan · Upgrading ICT and finance systems to modernise operations · Conducting a comprehensive governance review and drafting a new, modern and fit-for-purpose constitution · Revamping our brand, communications, and website to align with ASMR’s vision and strategic priorities. These accomplishments were made possible through the dedication and hard work of the ASMR Board, state committees, and our secretariat manager. I would also like to express my gratitude to our consultants from Moira Clay Consulting in particular for their exceptional work on the organisational review and development of the ASMR 2024–2028 Strategic Plan https://lnkd.in/gEVF5MRH , which sets the foundation for our future. In addition to these organisational advancements, I’m particularly proud of our advocacy efforts to improve funding and improve workforce conditions, and the strong ties we’ve continued to build with our peers in affiliate organisations. Collaborating with groups like Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI), the National Research and Innovation Alliance, and others has been instrumental in advocating for better funding, improved workforce conditions, and stronger support for early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs). These partnerships reinforce ASMR’s unwavering commitment to advancing the health and medical research sector, and they give me great confidence in the road ahead. While challenges remain, ASMR’s unwavering commitment to the sector gives me confidence in the road ahead. I also want to take a moment to thank Professor Matt Dun, our 2024 ASMR Medallist, for his inspirational contributions during Medical Research Week®. His story and dedication remind us why we do what we do. As I step down as President, I am thrilled to pass the baton to Professor Tony Kenna, whose vision and leadership will undoubtedly propel ASMR to new heights. I’m not going far, though—I’ll continue to serve as Executive Director, supporting ASMR’s mission and ongoing initiatives. To my research team, colleagues, collaborators and family—thank you for your unwavering support. Here’s to an exciting future for ASMR and the vital role we play in creating a healthier, more equitable Australia. #LeadershipTransition #HealthAndMedicalResearch #ASMR2024 #Advocacy #BusinessTransformation #ThankYou
