We’re thrilled to join forces with Wandiyali Restoration Trust to help bring back locally extinct wildlife in southern NSW. 🤝 AWC has signed a new 10-year agreement to share our reintroduction expertise at the beautiful Wandiyali~Environa Wildlife Sanctuary near Canberra, home to critically endangered grassy woodlands and a host of threatened species. Conserving both wildlife and culture through collaboration! A recent survey in remote Dambimangari Country has led to multiple new species confirmations for the area, as well as strengthening the partnerships that are key to protecting them. AWC and Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation staff worked together in the field for twoa fortnights to record species and sites of great cultural and ecological importance, with plenty of shared learning along the way. A little bit of possum magic in outback Queensland 💫 The team at Bowra Wildlife Sanctuary on Kunja Country have captured a Brushtail Possum on a camera trap – the first sighting of the species on sanctuary in over a decade! “I actually did a double take at the images,” says AWC Wildlife Ecologist Dr Helena Stokes. “We haven’t had any signs of possums living on sanctuary in a long time, then sanctuary managers recently found some scat we suspected to be from a possum, and then the photos turned up a couple of weeks later. Meet AWC Regional Ecologist, Dr Amanda Bourne 🔬 Amanda started in conservation on the other side of the world, and now leads the science program on 4 of our southwest Australian properties. “The best part of my job is being up close and personal with the huge impact that AWC’s conservation programs have for native species. Wongalara Wildlife Sanctuary is a sight to behold 😍 It spans more than 190,000 hectares of Ngalagkan-Rembarrnga Country, across the Gulf Fall and Uplands bioregion of the Northern Territory. Effective conservation activity is vital to protecting the incredible biodiversity here from the declines sweeping northern Australia. Given the complex threats that exist in the region – particularly altered fire regimes, invasive species and habitat degradation – this is no easy task.
