"Technology should be equitable and inclusive, and I am enthusiastic about contributing to this area to help make that vision a reality." We're celebrating the next generation of data scientists. Meet Tahsin Alamgir Kheya - a PhD Candidate at Deakin University. Her research focuses on evaluating and mitigating bias in Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, with the goal of developing tools to detect and address bias in real-world applications. To find out more about Tahsin, her research, and why she's doing that research, read our Next Gen Spotlight story: https://lnkd.in/gGq2VWF5

It's probably something many in the data sciences aren't thinking about when it comes to #AI - but should. We're talking about the law! The Random Sample podcast just released a special two-part series digging into the unexpected ways that AI and the law intersect and why it's something we all need to pay attention to. The guests for the series are: - A/Prof Michael Guihot from QUT Law - Dr Henry Fraser from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society - Hosted by Dr. Aaron Snoswell, PhD. from QUT Centre for Data Science To listen, just search for The Random Sample wherever you get your podcasts. Or scan the QR code in the image below.

Thrilled to be featured in ADSN’s “Next Generation” Spotlight Series! As a researcher in the critical field of Bias in AI systems, I recognize the fact that bias doesn't solely manifest in models for the algorithms, but the data itself. In the pursuit of fairness in such systems, we have to tackle these systematic discrepancies at the root, integrating ethical and technical considerations within the field of data science. Thanks to the Australian Data Science Network for this opportunity and to everyone who has supported my journey so far, especially my supervisors. Also, I didn't have a lot of options to work with so here's me looking like a chipmunk (note to self: take more professional photos). Here's to staying data-driven, building inclusive AI, and improving my photo game. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/g2xprAeV

Congratulations 🎉 to Australian Data Science Network on winning the 2024 UN World Data Forum's #ArcGIS competition. Check out the winning entry: Understanding heat risk in New South Wales here 👉 https://arcg.is/0qTqC0 and explore why rising temperatures underpin the need for resilient communities and climate-sensitive urban planning.
ADSN Team Wins Global Award at UN World Data Forum! A team created under the umbrella of the Australian Data Science Network (ADSN) takes the top spot in its category at the 2024 UN World Data Forum’s ArcGIS competition. This global contest challenges participants to craft compelling data-driven stories using ArcGIS StoryMaps. Each submission had to align with at least one U.N. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and fit within one of four competition themes. The team’s winning entry, Understanding Heat Risk in New South Wales, Australia, took the top spot in the theme "Effective partnerships for better data and a more equitable data ecosystem."
