Hello and welcome to Big Sand! I’m Sally Coleman - the lead artist & creative director (plus currently the project manager, label manager, publisher, publicist, sync and booking agent!). I’m a musician, industry person and former radio host, previously on air as one half of Sally and Erica on triple j Breakfast. This LinkedIn page is going to be a bit different to the band’s Instagram and TikTok. One one hand, Big Sand is my artist project. I’ve poured my heart into working on the music and artwork and story and characters, and I want to share all of this with an audience. But it’s also an innovation project - an expedition into a world of new technology, emerging digital spaces, and different ways of envisioning the future music industry. So as well as being an artist, I’ve had to put on a new hat: that of an ‘industry entrepreneur’. I don’t think these two roles clash at all! But I’ll be using this LinkedIn page as a space to talk mostly about the latter. I’d love to share what I’m learning in the world of virtual production, metaverse content, innovative music tech, motion capture and more. Big Sand is a science fiction virtual band, set on a beautiful but harsh desert planet. The elevator pitch? How about 'Australia's answer to Gorillaz' or, 'it's Disney, but indie'. The project is the brainchild of musician, entrepreneur and former triple j Breakfast host Sally Coleman, and involves some of Australia’s most exciting musicians, visual artists, animators, designers and developers. As well as being highly collaborative, Big Sand has a focus on exploring emerging technology, innovative release strategies, creative social media and playful audience experiences. Big Sand's debut single, 'Take Me Home', is a wonky, off-the-wall banger written in collaboration with ARIA nominated producer Alice Ivy.
