Brickworks Careers | Meet Maria N. What is your job title and where are you based? I am the Occupational Hygiene Manager, based at Wollert, Victoria. Tell us about what your job entails? Primarily my role is to prevent and respond to occupational hygiene-related exposures at all Brickworks sites. This includes providing specialist advice, air monitoring, and if required, providing the expertise to inform any initiatives to reduce risk to health and safety associated with occupational hygiene hazards in the workplace. Can you share one of your most valuable on-the-job learning experiences? Working in the health and safety field is not without its challenges, but at the end of the day, it’s about protecting the wellbeing of people…Simple things like acting with kindness, listening, asking questions, and admitting when you don’t know the answer, can make the biggest difference in building relationships and influencing how people respond to you. The Hobart Women’s Shelter, also known as the Isabel and Elsie Project, emerged as a critical response to the surge of domestic abuse experienced by women and children during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2021. Human rights lawyer Cate Sumner and architect Emily Taylor, in collaboration with architect Christopher Clinton, identified an urgent need for long-term housing solutions for women and children displaced by homelessness and domestic violence. Their vision was to create homes that would not only offer shelter but maintain connections with the existing communities of these relocated families.  We are proud to be a part of this important project.
