About us

We are a registered community housing provider and charity with a long history of delivering community housing in Sydney. We first began as SWISH, the South-West Inner Sydney Housing Cooperative, in 1984. Since then, we have joined with local community housing providers, officially becoming Bridge Housing in 2009. Today, we manage 3,600 properties across metropolitan Sydney, home to 5,300 people. Our purpose is to change lives through more homes and quality services. Working at the coalface of Sydney’s housing crisis, we know that a safe, secure, affordable home is the stable base that people need to do well. We take a long term view to running our business so that we can continue changing lives for generations to come and this means carefully considering the environmental and social impacts of our decisions.

  • Collaborative funding is vital to innovating how we address housing need. Housing Australia and Homes NSW support the impacts that our new temporary accommodation will have on people needing short-term accommodation now. We are looking forward to being operational, with support services from Mission Australia, before the end of the year. Housing Australia CEO, Scott Langford said, “This is an incredible milestone for Housing Australia, and an opportunity to ensure people facing a crisis have access to safe and secure accommodation. “This won’t be the last, with plans to fund more temporary accommodation projects through the National Housing Infrastructure Facility. We look forward to working with stakeholders to deliver this much needed accommodation.” Homes NSW CEO Rebecca Pinkstone said, “This project clearly demonstrates what can be achieved when we work in partnership to boost housing for our community. These homes will provide a pathway out of homelessness and housing insecurity and a foundation for a better life. Homes NSW is proud to be able to provide funding alongside contributions from Housing Australia and Bridge Housing Limited to acquire the boarding house, which may have been lost to redevelopment. This site will now be permanently transformed into safe and secure accommodation for people in housing need.” Our CEO, Laurie Leigh noted, “There are people in crisis without a bed to sleep in tonight. This funding answers the need for immediate temporary accommodation that is safe and dignified, with the added benefit of onsite social support provided by Mission Australia. A place for people to reset and work through next steps in their journey to more stable and secure housing." “We are delighted that government is addressing both ends of the housing spectrum - those who need help now as well as long-term housing supply. Thank you to Minister O’Neil, Housing Australia and Homes NSW for this finance to improve housing outcomes." Read more here: https://bit.ly/4g0iJWZ #socialhousing #fundingsocialhousing

  • “Creative Urban Renewal” inspired PowerHousing Australia delegates. The panel facilitated by Michelle Phillips of YWCA National Housing was presented by Dave Tordoff of Hayball architects, Lindsey Gray of Bridge Housing, Carolyn Doherty of Argyle Housing and international guest Duncan Higgon of Canada's Housing PHS Community Services. Panelists shared their experience engaging with community for authentic outcomes Learnings from the nuanced, candid conversation on inner-city Redfern Place, regional Griffin Green and Canada's Woodwards Community Development: 1. Understanding the Community: Reflecting the community’s needs is crucial. By capturing feedback over an extended period from long-term local residents, we ensure we deliver real value in that community's eyes. 2. Partnership and Engagement: Collaborating with the community and partners is essential. Early decisions on dwelling mix and community meaning help shape a well-connected, vibrant development. 3. Affordable and Sustainable Living: Commitment to affordable, sustainable housing is key. Design elements can also include swales for environmental sustainability and trauma-informed spaces for resident well-being. Griffin Green included medicinal gardens and incidental bump spaces for residents to connect. No dig sites and modular designs also make projects timely and financially viable. 4. Inclusive Spaces: Diverse housing options, commercial spaces, and community areas like basketball courts. Practicing the principle of “nothing about us, without us” ensures better outcomes by listening to the community. 5. Protecting Green Spaces: Overlooking Redfern Oval is a significant amenity for Redfern Place. We aim to protect and reintegrate the site for everyone’s benefit after 15 years where the site lay dormant. 6. Collaboration Framework: With input from 30 consultants, 3 architectural agencies, and 1 landscape team, Bridge Housing have been able to build a framework for collaboration on Redfern Place that connects to the country and supports a tenure-blind approach. These insights underscore the importance of community engagement, sustainable practices, and inclusive design in urban renewal projects. Duncan Higgon summed up the key to creative urban renewal as “outcomes are better if we listen.” #UrbanRenewal #CommunityEngagement #SustainableLiving #InclusiveDesign #RedfernPlace #GriffinGreen

  • Six actionable takeaways offered at “Beyond the Crisis: Charting a Path to a Sustainable Housing Future” panel discussion at PowerHousing Australia’s member exchange conference last week: 1. Increase the size of HAFF – PowerHousing Australia is calling for a quadrupling of funding 2. Revise the HAFF procurement approach – introduce an annualized program. 3. Support a target of 20,000 new properties delivered by CHPs with a target of 1 in 10 households to be social or affordable housing by 2045. 4. As CHPs are custodians of assets, support funding approaches that enable properties to be held in perpetuity and leveraged to increase social housing. 5. Treat social housing as infrastructure investment. 6. Encourage all Councils to develop affordable housing strategies. This dynamic discussion, facilitated by Tina Perinotto of The Fifth Estate benefited from the combined experience of Brendan Coates, Project Director, Housing and Economic Security, Grattan Institute, Doug Cameron, Commissioner of the Peoples Commission into the Housing Crisis, Nicola Lemon, National Social and Affordable Housing lead at KPMG and Bridge’s own COO Simone Parsons. #Haff #sustainablehousing #socialhousing #affordablehousing #bridgehousing #inclusionaryzoning
