'Embers are the enemy' - powerful insight from this USA TODAY piece on wildfire home protection.
We cannot stop wildfires; it’s part of our ecosystem. Yet we can stop the fingers of wildfires from reaching deep into our suburban communities. The Palisades Fire is an extreme, catastrophic event marked by elements of conflagration that are challenging to overcome. However, Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety - IBHS research points to steps homeowners can take to meaningfully reduce their risk by mitigating vulnerable areas of the home, protecting against wildfires more frequently seen. Putting these science-backed mitigations into action, starting with establishing a 5-foot noncombustible buffer around the home, reduces a structure’s risk of ember ignition. In USA TODAY, I share how we can narrow the path of wildfire’s destruction with Elizabeth Weise: https://lnkd.in/e3Xg-m48

Honored to be featured in Heatmap News alongside other innovative companies working to prevent and mitigate wildfires through technology. As we witness the devastating fires in Los Angeles, we must highlight how technology can help address these challenges. Pano AI Fire Aside Overstory Gridware #WildfirePrevention #Innovation
Here are the five "firetech" startups to look out for that are working on out-of-the-box solutions to the problems of wildfire prevention and mitigation. Here's a sneak peek at the roundup from Katie Brigham: ✅ Gridware, which uses sensors placed on power poles to provide continuous monitoring of grid infrastructure. "Our country depends on the electric grid, yet until now, utilities have been operating it without reasonable monitoring capabilities," says Bryan Schreier. ✅ BurnBot, which deploys robots that can chop up vegetation and conduct controlled burns. “I don't think you can ever replace the talent and the expertise and the know-how of the front line [firefighters],” says CEO Anukool Lakhina. “But what you can do is make their job safer.” ✅ Fire Aside, makes software products that help fire departments and other safety agencies to digitize their inspections processes. “It enhances the reach of municipal fire departments so that they can, at scale, communicate with their neighborhoods and their communities, and automate and digitize these inspections,” says Jay Ribakove. ✅ Pano AI, which relies on artificial intelligence and computer vision to automatically detect when and where a wildfire is breaking out. ✅ Overstory, which provides utilities with a “global vegetation management platform” that applies artificial intelligence to satellite imagery, allowing the company to identify the location, size, health, and species of any tree in the world. Proud to partner with California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) San Benito Unit on their latest prescribed burn project! Our #RX2 remote blackline machines helped minimize smoke impact on local residents while effectively helping to manage invasive species. This #GoodFire collaboration demonstrates how innovative tools can support fire agencies in achieving their prescribed burn goals. BurnBot is proud to support CalFire and its initiatives to expand California's prescribed fire capacity one acre at a time. Funding for this project provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Business and Workforce Development Grants. Proud to see BurnBot's impact on forest health management highlighted in a recent Reno Gazette-Journal op-ed by Tahoe Fund's leadership. Our remote-operated masticators completed a 22-acre treatment in Incline in just three days, demonstrating the efficiency of innovative forestry solutions. Looking forward to introducing additional technologies this spring to enable safer, smoke-free controlled burns with extended operational windows! Thank you to Tahoe Fund for the partnership and recognition in advancing forest health treatments in the Tahoe Basin. We're grateful to be part of creating more resilient communities. Have you been rethinking wildfire prevention? We have. New research by Dr. Christopher Hakkenberg and colleagues at Northern Arizona University reveals why we need to change our approach. Published on https://hubs.ly/Q02-nxRy0, here are the key takeaways: -Traditional Approach May Not Be Enough: While total biomass and canopy height matter, these factors become less reliable predictors of fire severity in extreme conditions (steep slopes, high winds). -Ladder Fuels Are the Critical Factor: The study found that ladder fuels (vegetation between ground and tree canopies) consistently predicted wildfire severity across ALL conditions - making them the most reliable indicator of fire risk. -Less Can Be More: Forests with sparse understories showed lower severity levels regardless of conditions, suggesting targeted understory management could be more effective than removing entire forest canopies. At BurnBot, we're already incorporating these findings into our fuels management solutions. Want to protect your land using the latest science? Let's connect.
