Around 5–10% of people with COVID infections go on to experience #longCOVID, with symptoms lasting three months or more. Around 5–10% of people with COVID infections go on to experience long COVID, with symptoms lasting three months or more. Researchers have proposed several biological mechanisms to explain long COVID. However, in a perspective article published in the latest Medical Journal of Australia, Burnet researchers argue that much, if not all, long COVID appears to be driven by the virus itself persisting in the body. Read what the science says about how long COVID appears to be driven by "long infection" on The Conversation Australia + NZ here: https://lnkd.in/gxdjQNmz Written by Burnet director and CEO Prof Brendan Crabb AC, theme leader of Antiviral Immunity Dr Gabriela Khoury and senior research fellow Dr Michelle Scoullar.

Burnet acknowledges the important contribution of Troy Combo, program manager for the Eliminate Hepatitis C (EC) Australia Aboriginal Health Plan, and Dr Nicole Allard, senior clinical advisor at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, in co-authoring the first-ever liver cancer chapter for the National Guide to Preventive Healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. Liver cancer is often caused by viral hepatitis (B & C), alcoholic liver disease, and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease. It typically occurs in a damaged liver, with cirrhosis as a significant risk factor. Key highlights of the chapter include: - prevention strategies, which include hepatitis B vaccination, treatment for hepatitis B & C, and modifying health risk behaviours such as alcohol consumption and diet - the recommendation that testing for hepatitis B should be offered to all adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people whose immune status is unknown. Developed by NACCHO Australia in collaboration with The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), this fourth edition of the National Guide features greater involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and reviewers to ensure it aligns with community experiences and needs. https://lnkd.in/ga9Nv7FM

On #WorldPrematurityDay, we reaffirm our commitment to reducing preterm births, in Australia and globally. We recognise the additional support mothers and their preterm or small babies need, and we're dedicated to advancing research in this area. Our Accelerating Innovation for Mothers (AIM) project is designed to encourage greater investment in research and development for pregnancy-specific conditions, including preterm labour and intrauterine growth restriction. This is just one of the ways we are helping make a difference to mothers and their babies. https://lnkd.in/gSDX_RmD

Professor James Beeson, deputy director of Research Strategy and head of Burnet’s Malaria Immunity and Vaccines Group, has been awarded two grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to drive the development of innovative malaria vaccines. The two related grants will fund the use of cutting-edge research technologies in multiple clinical studies in East Africa to identify antibodies that precisely target key #malaria proteins. “Using advanced immunology approaches and biostatistical modelling, we’ll uncover which antibody types and antigen combinations are most protective against malaria, helping prioritise targets for future malaria vaccine development,” Professor Beeson said.
