We are the national peak body representing Australia’s 3 million unpaid carers.
About us
Australia has over 3 million carers. Carers are people who provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged. The chances are you are a carer, need a carer or know a carer. Unpaid carers provide an estimated 1.9 billion hours of care every year, saving the Australian Government up to $60.3 billion annually. Yet many carers are in poor health, and face financial hardship and social isolation. That's where Carers Australia comes in. We are a national peak body representing Australia's carers, advocating on their behalf to influence policies and services at a national level. We work collaboratively with partners and our member organisations (the Network of state and territory Carers Associations) to deliver a range of essential national carer services. Carers Australia works to improve the health, wellbeing, resilience and financial security of carers, and to ensure that caring is a shared responsibility of family, community and government. We strive to raise awareness of the needs and issues facing carers. We achieve this through representing carers in meetings with politicians and policy makers, in our research and policy submission, and by working closely with the media. We offer a range of services and programs to help carers and their families, including our Better Start program, the Carer Advisory Service, the National Carer Counselling Program, Mental Health Carer Counselling, and the Young Carers Program and Young Carer Bursary Programme. We can help you find the support you need to keep on caring. Carers Australia acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, and pays respect to Elders past, present and future.

We understand you've been overwhelmed with political messaging over the past few weeks (whether your state/territory recently had an election, or if it has been noise from the USA) 🤯 But we ask you to please turn your attention to an issue that affects +3m Australians, and will have an impact on you or someone you know ❤️🩹 Please take five seconds and sign a petition to allow unpaid carers access to super 🗝️ https://loom.ly/gxEHA-o

A study, released today by The Australian National University, revealed that 1 in 6 kids in a classroom go home to carer duties (on top of homework) 🧑🎓 Young carers tend to be a year behind their peers in learning, more socially isolated and are obviously later to enter the workforce (due to their responsibilities at home) 🫶 Give some extra love to the young carers in your network this week 🤟 https://lnkd.in/gF9Vjstn #CarersAustralia #YoungCarers #YoungCarerSupport

This National Grandparents Day we acknowlegde the thousands of Aussie grandparents who provide unpaid care and support for grandchildren with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or substance issue. You really are heroes. Similarly, we'd like to offer our profound respect for young carers who look after their grandparents (11% of carerss are under the age of 25). #grandparentsday #grandparents #carersaustralia

The New York Times published an article called "5 books to make caregiving a little more manageable" 📚 Highlights include a title dedicated to anyone caring for people with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, a self-help book written by a former First Lady of the United States, a counsellor's guide to "the heart of what is so challenging about being in a caregiving relationship", how to navigate difficult conversations when it comes to end-of-life care amongst siblings, and one that chronicles the eight stages of caregiving (from "shock and mobilisation" to "the long goodbye"). Voiceover, by our CEO, Annabel Reid: “Carers need the ongoing support of all Australians, from government, business and media, to classrooms and families. AND medical professionals and our community. And with 3 million carers in Australia, that gives us millions of reasons to care.” Thank you, Australia, for showing you care for our 3m carers during #NationalCarersWeek. We're chuffed by all the events you organised, stories you told locally, by the reaction of government and by the candid conversations shared with nationwide audiences. You all helped make last week a huge success. #CarersAustralia #MillionsOfReasonsToCare
