  • 💜 If you have followed our work, you'll know that we’re on our way to building the New Generation Catherine House. With 52 apartments, Women's Centre, and spaces for education and recovery, we’re committed to creating a safe, supportive environment for women experiencing homelessness. To make this vision a reality, we have made a minimum commitment of raising $2.5 million dollars. We know the task is ambitious, but we are calling on philanthropic support from the South Australian community through our Build Her Up Campaign. We hope you will join with us to support the next generation of girls and women who will need our support. 💖 To be a part of this lifesaving project visit https://ow.ly/gfZ750V3eec and pledge your support today.

  • Huge thanks to the Australian Federal Police for their powerful presentation – our team learned about forced marriage, human trafficking and slavery, and how they all tie into family violence. Their passion and expertise are truly inspiring, and we’ll be using this knowledge to better support the women we work with and spread awareness in our community. The work the AFP do is vital for keeping so many people safe, but combatting these crimes is everyone’s responsibility, and you too can help identify human trafficking and assist those experiencing it seek help. • It was a privilege for Catherine House to be part of the DFSV Royal Commission listening session with Commissioner Natasha Stott Despoja. The staff team were able to highlight system barriers and other oppressive structures and processes, which keep women entrenched in the cycle of violence, poverty, homelessness, and poor health, with extraordinarily little access to recovery and healing services for them and for their children. We also hosted a group of former clients, for their own listening session with the Commissioner. They took time out from their employment and busy lives and came very prepared to talk about how the mostly inadequate service responses had impacted their lives and the wellbeing of their children. Despite how emotionally gruelling it was, all were able to articulate, the mistreatment, indifference and neglect they had experienced while trying to leave the violence. While some could reflect on positive interactions with professionals and services, these seem to be the exception, not the norm. Most of the clients were mothers whose children also had lived experience of the violence. They were insistent, that change was needed to help them in their healing journey and that help must be freely and easily accessible to their children, to assist mitigate the lifelong trauma that is a result of DFSV. The advocacy of lived experience teaches us so much about what is not working and what might work better. 💜
