About us
The Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN) launched in November 2014 on the back of a progressive local government and collaboration between Canberra’s world class education and research institutions, who now represent our Foundation Members. To date CBRIN houses and collaborates with 12 programs, has had more than 24,000 visitors and has helped more than 800 budding entrepreneurs and SMEs through its lean innovation focused education. Canberra’s unique environment for collaboration, unrivalled to anywhere else; provides easy access to multi layers of government and industry leaders in science, research and education which makes this city a hotbed for innovation and business growth. In Canberra’s short history, there is a rich culture of innovation; from global inventions that are now incorporated in our day to day lives such as Wi-Fi, to leading technology enriching children’s education, including Mathletics and being the first jurisdiction in Australia to pilot semi-autonomous vehicles. This city provides an exciting environment that combines innovation and entrepreneurship with science and education that embraces challenges to break new ground.

Last week, on November 15th, we celebrated Women's Entrepreneurship Day, a chance to honour the incredible impact of women entrepreneurs. You might have missed it. So, let's get real and go beyond the usual "women power" cheerleading and discuss why women entrepreneurs matter—not just for themselves but for the greater good of society. Women hold up half the sky—but let’s face it, they are often doing it with one hand tied behind their back. From underfunding to unconscious biases, the speed bumps are prolific. We know that women-led businesses consistently deliver better returns, and tackle issues many others shy away from, like healthcare, education, and sustainability. This week’s blog post at Humanosity is inspired by the opportunities and challenges women entrepreneurs face, the unique value they bring, and the systemic changes needed to unlock their full impact. We must stop sidelining half the population and start supporting women entrepreneurs—not just as a “nice to have” but as an essential force for change. And while you are at it, please shout out a woman entrepreneur or female-led business you admire in the comments. Let’s keep the conversation going!

The Canberra Innovation Network turned 10 yesterday! They also opened level 4, the scale-up hub. It has been terrific to be on this journey as #Canberra has moved from an infant to an adolescent. Back in 2013 as the city grappled with the question 'How to build a successful innovation ecosystem' several options and models were considered. The keys to this success: Collaboration between institutions Generosity of people; willingness to volunteer Support for a single vision / mission Support from the local Government Consistency of funding Great Leadership Willingness to try new things Eternal optimism Aiming High Welcoming new people Long term view Hard work Aspiration for excellence in all we do Self-belief We have all of these things...... and more....! 11,000 people through over 200 events per year! Amazing stats. This could not have been possible without the vision, action, energy and belief of many, many people. I'm going to name as many people as I can recall who have made our city and our innovation eco-system so great! Prof Michael Cardew-Hall Marcus Dawe Sophia Hamblin Wang Anna Pino Candice Edye Lachlan Blackhall Rory Ford Mark Reed Stephen Parker AO Michael Frater Anne-Marie Perret Michele Troni Tony Henshaw Sarah Pearson Sharyn Smith Craig Davis Irene Zhen Hannah Hartgers Hayley Maddox Kareena Arthy Kate Lundy Michelle (Chelle) Melbourne Phillip Williamson Doug Stuart Peter Lilley Carol Lilley Daniel Shaddock Dr Cindy Reese Mitchell, PhD Glen Hassett Brent Chick Hala Batainah Petr Adámek Matt Bullock Tim Hirst Uwe Boettcher Steve Hardy See comments for more name checks - I used the LinkedIn maximum in the post! #Vision #Action #Results #CBR #Creative #Connected

Social Innovator. 2025 ACT Australian of the Year. Honorary Fellow Deakin University, AFR 100 Women of Influence. TEDx Speaker. Churchill Policy Fellow. Art of Agency. MissingSchool. Robots4Good
🌟 Humbled to be named the 2025 ACT Australian of the Year! 🌟 This recognition is a powerful platform to positively spotlight kids with complex medical and mental health challenges who miss school. The fact is that no amount of teaching, funding, support services, or charitable programs for mental health and wellbeing in schools can help a child who is not there. And it's an issue that goes beyond "helping" these kids. This is about enabling their continued presence at school through everyday technology, when they can’t be there—not just for their sake but for ours too. When kids are seen and heard, they bring their unique perspectives, talents, and contributions to our schools and broader communities. Every child has something vital to give and gain, and it starts with being present. Thank you to everyone who has stood with me and MissingSchool in this journey of large-scale, systemic change for good. I’m forever grateful 💛 (pics of the event and special thanks coming soon …) #ausoftheyear Australian of the Year Awards

2024 marks 10 years of CBRIN and the 10th Annual Innovation Showcase. We've been celebrating by inviting core community members to be part of the Women in Innovation network and update us on what they've been working on! To celebrate, we sat down with Zoe Piper, CEO of Rezicast Systems and asked about her journey, where she is now, the challenges she's overcome and all the wins along the way. Canberra Innovation Network's 'ScaleUp Hub' is officially open - representing an expansion and massive value-add for the ACT. From my daily conversations, it's clear Canberra’s tech sector is much larger and more crucial to our economy than many realise. With this in mind, it’s critical that our tech businesses can stay, grow, and thrive right here in the ACT if they choose. CBRIN's expansion means they've now doubled in physical footprint. Up until now, they've been central in helping startups incubate, innovate, and find product-market fit within a highly collaborative and supportive environment. But with growth, many of these successful companies would eventually outgrow CBRIN’s nest and move on. The new 'Hub' will now house these scaleups, keeping them in a high-innovation environment and connecting them to a thriving 'ecosystem' of events, mentors, and experts to accelerate their next phase of growth. While there’s a lot more we need to do - to retain even more businesses and make Canberra an even more diverse economic hub - this is a solid step forward! A sizeable thanks to Shashank Bokil for our tour, and congrats too to Petr, Craig and the whole team for a vision realised. Given its beautiful fit-out, favourable terms, and established community, it’s no surprise that offices are already being snapped up.
