About us

Cecil provides access to a variety of nature datasets globally. We handle the entire process of data acquisition and preparation so you can stay focused on developing data insights. This includes curating datasets with scientific criteria, making them compatible by default, and providing access to a secure database system optimised for time-series and spatial analysis at scale.

  • The Hidden Power of Nature Data Today Cecil and Alex Logan were featured in the MCJ newsletter. The article breaks down the challenges of fragmented nature data, the importance of equitable sharing and how the Nature Data Sharing Initiative (NDSI) is helping bridge these gaps. Also, a mention to Cascade Climate for their Data Quarry.

Nature data is everywhere—but much of it remains siloed, inaccessible, or underutilized. Yet, better data sharing could be a game-changer for climate resilience, investment, and innovation. In this week’s MCJ newsletter, Alex Logan, CEO and Co-founder at Cecil, breaks down the challenges of fragmented nature data, the importance of equitable sharing, and how the Nature Data Sharing Initiative (NDSI) is helping bridge these gaps. 🔗 Read the full piece below.

  • Chloris Geospatial's Aboveground Biomass (AGB) datasets are increasingly being recognised as an excellent option for high-fidelity annual biomass monitoring and as a stocking index for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) projects—particularly for Verra's VM0047 methodology. Cecil's Python SDK provides streamlined access to Chloris's AGB datasets through an API and analytical database. Teams can use a modern SQL database to analyse the following time-series and spatial data at scale: - Annual aboveground biomass stock and change (30 m) - Aboveground biomass stock and change (10 m) Reach out to our team for information on how to get started for free.

  • Today we're introducing our second scientific concept, Land Use and Land Cover (LULC). This newsletter defines LULC, explores its applications in nature data workflows, and sets out what to expect from common LULC datasets. Visit our documentation to learn more about our scientific approach, read concept notes on the scientific concepts we support, and explore the datasets available on Cecil today. https://docs.cecil.earth/

  • Cecil was featured in Planet's blog about scaling climate impact with their Forest Carbon products. At Cecil, we're seeing data and engineering teams get started with these products in days, not months. Our Python SDK includes an API and analytical database, providing seamless access to datasets like Planet’s Forest Carbon Monitoring data. With Cecil data teams can securely connect their data operations and leverage a modern SQL database in their workflow to analyse time-series and spatial data at scale. Read more with the link in the comments, and get in touch to schedule a call with our team. #forestcarbon #geospatial #python #sustainability

This article explores one of the seven datasets available on Cecil's first platform release, which quantify plant biomass and various supporting variables, including canopy height and canopy cover. We also demonstrate the time series capabilities of this data and how you can use information from external sources to add context and help interpret and validate the data accessed through Cecil's platform. This spotlight on plant biomass data is just the start—Cecil will be adding new datasets, starting with land use and land cover, and announcing additional data provider partnerships soon. Our next spotlight article will focus on Planet’s recently announced global 3.5 metres per pixel spatial resolution forest carbon monitoring dataset.

Cecil has featured in Citi's latest Global Insights Nature Report. Nature’s health is in decline, leaving our planet facing a twin climate and nature crisis. The contribution of business and finance to nature loss and their role in addressing it are increasingly coming into focus. In the Citi GPS report, they assess: - How industries impact and depend on nature across all realms - land, freshwater, oceans, atmosphere - and their revenue exposure. - Potential hotspots of conflict between industrial activities and ecologically sensitive areas. - How solutions like Cecil’s nature data platform can help companies implementing nature positive strategies. Thanks to Ying Qin, PhD, Devon Stone and the wonderful Citi team for involving us in this important research. Link to full report in comments below

Last week, we announced our partnership with Chloris Geospatial. Chloris datasets offer comprehensive insights into global biomass losses from deforestation and degradation, as well as biomass gains from vegetation growth - essential tools for companies working on reforestation: ↳ 10 m resolution, available annually since 2017. ↳ 30m resolution, available annual since 2000. At Cecil, we’re excited to streamline access to these datasets for data and science teams working to analyse, baseline, and monitor global forests at scale.
