  • Very excited to see the launch of the ReALiSE program! As part of this amazing Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade initiative, our project focuses on defining key adolescent NCD risks and communicating evidence-based actions to prevent adolescent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Indonesia and Fiji. Congratulations again to the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and the Melbourne Children's Global Health team on this significant achievement, and we are proud to contribute to the ReALiSE program – the Regional Alliance for Learning in Systems for Equitable Child and Adolescent Health – which will strengthen resilience in public health systems and engage with youth leaders and local communities to improve the health of all young people. With huge thanks to Dr Lucas de Toca PSM and his team including Sean Starmer 🙏 #adolescenthealth #youthhealth #NCDs #research

Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) will partner with 12 countries in the Pacific and Southeast Asia under a $10 million initiative to improve child and adolescent health across the region.   The Australian Government has awarded MCRI a strategic grant as part of its Partnerships for a Healthy Region Initiative.   The three-year funding will be used to establish the ReALiSE program – the Regional Alliance for Learning in Systems for Equitable Child and Adolescent Health – which will strengthen resilience in public health systems and engage with youth leaders and local communities to improve the health of all young people. Australia's Ambassador for Global Health Dr Lucas de Toca PSM signed the agreement with MCRI Director Professor Kathryn North AC this week alongside the MCRI Global Health team. Join us this Thursday, Dec 5, for our next seminar series presentation, 'Anxiety & depression across Adolescence: insights from a Longitudinal Study of Contemporary Australian Youth' with Dr Ellie Robson, Prof Susan Sawyer and Prof Nicki Reavley. 👏 Amid growing concerns about a youth ‘mental health crisis,’ understanding of how common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, evolve across adolescence is crucial to inform contemporary responses. While cross-sectional studies provide valuable snapshots, few longitudinal studies have comprehensively tracked the course of these conditions during this critical developmental period. This seminar will present findings from the Child to Adult Transition Study (CATS), a Melbourne-based longitudinal cohort study. CATS has measured depressive and anxiety symptoms annually over eight waves, following participants from age 10 to 18 years. The presentation will delve into the prevalence of clinically significant symptoms, their recurrence across adolescence, and the likelihood of recovery, offering novel insights into the persistence and variability of CMDs in young people. This presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with Professor Susan Sawyer AM and Professor Nicola Reavley. Questions this event will address: ▶️ What insights can longitudinal studies provide in comparison to cross sectional ‘snapshots’ in time? ▶️ Are adolescents’ experiences of anxiety and depressive symptoms short-lived or more persistent? ▶️ Does the data from Child to Adult Transition Study support concerns of a ‘youth mental health crisis’? ▶️ What next steps are required to understand and respond better to concerns of a ‘youth mental health crisis’?
