  • Today is World Children’s Day, UNICEF global day of action marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. By listening to children and young people we can fulfil their right to self-expression, understand their ideas for a better world, and include their priorities in our actions today. Earlier this month, the Interim Commissioner shared a “postcard” activity, asking children and young people for their views on how a new Commission for Children and Young People should work to make their lives better. The Interim Commissioner has received many hundreds of responses and would like to thank all the children and young people who have shared their views, as well as the schools and organisations that helped share this engagement opportunity. The CCYP team is hard at work analysing all the responses and these will help inform the Interim Commissioner’s submission to the Tasmanian Government about its draft Commission for Children Bill.

  • The Tasmanian Government is creating a team of people called a “Commission” to stand up for the rights and wellbeing of all children and young people, to help make sure they have a good life. We want to hear from children and young people about their views and ideas for how the new team should work and we will make sure the Government knows what they have to say. If you know a young person between the ages of 12 – 21 years, we’d like your help to invite them to join one of our focus groups. • It's Children's Week, and there are over 90 free events taking place all around Tasmania until 27 October. The theme for this year is ‘Children have the right to a safe and clean environment’, and is based on Article 24 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Play helps children and young people grow socially, emotionally and physically, and allows them to connect with others, explore, imagine and be creative. To check out all the fun activities for children and young people, you can take a look at the 2024 Children's Week Activity Guide by visiting: https://ccyp.me/cwt24

  • The Tasmanian Government is consulting on draft legislation to establish a new statutory Commission for Children and Young People with all the powers and resources necessary to perform an expanded range of functions on behalf of children and young people in Tasmania. To inform a submission in response to the draft Bill, and to this once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a new nation-leading, children’s oversight body for Tasmania, the Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People is seeking to engage with children and young people to learn what they want from their new Commission. Children and young people are invited to send the Interim Commissioner a virtual "postcard" with their views and ideas by 15 November 2024. Full details are available at ccyp.me/postcard.

  • “All Australian children are entitled to grow up safe, healthy and get the support they need to reach their full potential.” – Australian Children’s Commissioners, Guardians and Advocates (ACCGA) Yesterday, the ACCGA released a joint statement for Anti-Poverty Week (13-19 October), urging governments to take immediate action to address the root causes of poverty. They called for bold steps to break the cycle of disadvantage that affects families, communities, and especially children. Ending child poverty is possible, and it’s time for bold action to break the cycle. • Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay, which coincides with the Mental Health Council of Tasmania's Mental Health Week. It’s a time to raise awareness, promote mental wellbeing, and break the stigma around mental illness. 💚 Article 39 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child reminds us: "children have the right to get help if they have been hurt, neglected, treated badly or affected by war, so they can get back their health and dignity". Here in Tasmania, it’s crucial that every child and young person has access to the support they need, no matter who they are or where they live. 🤝 There are events happening across the state to celebrate the week. Head to www.mhct.org/program to get involved.
