🌆 World Cities Day 2024: Celebrating Youth Climate Changemakers! 🌍🔥 This year, World Cities Day spotlights “Youth Climate Changemakers: Catalysing Local Action for Urban Sustainability.” As cities expand and face mounting climate challenges, it’s clear that young people have a crucial role in driving change. By 2050, nearly 70% of the global population will live in urban areas. Youth, particularly in rapidly growing cities of the Global South, are on the frontlines of climate impacts—yet they’re also leading the way with innovative solutions. At the Cities Research Institute, we’re training the next generation of urban leaders through our HDR (Higher Degree Research) programs, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to shape resilient, sustainable cities. By fostering youth leadership, we’re building a network of changemakers ready to tackle the urban challenges of tomorrow. 🌿 Happy World Cities Day! Let’s recognise and support our youth in shaping cities that thrive. 🙌 #WorldCitiesDay #YouthChangemakers #ClimateAction #UrbanSustainability #YouthLeadership #ResilientCities #SustainableDevelopment #FutureCities #GriffithResearch #CitiesResearch #NextGenLeaders

Exploring #DisruptiveFutures with DUBAI FUTURE FOUNDATION 🌏 Cities' Jo McCallum has had an exciting start to the FEEL | A Disruptive Futures Program—where collaboration and cutting-edge innovation take centre stage! 🚀 1,500 applicants globally applied for the inaugural program, and Jo is the only #Australian of the 41 selected to attend. It’s great to have our Research at Griffith community represented and engaged in forward-thinking conversations alongside global leaders and innovators. The insights shared by His Excellency Omar Sultan AlOlama, Dr Mohamed Qasem, and Dr Antony Rowstron are powerful reminders that with technology like Silica glass data storage, the future is already in motion. And yes, spider bot archivists? Count us in! 🕷️🤖 At the Cities Research Institute, we're proud to support participation in programs that spark bold ideas and foster connections—because #thefutureiscollaborative. A special shout-out to Cara Beal, Bronwyn Harch (FTSE, FQA), and Griffith University for championing this opportunity, and thank you to the DUBAI FUTURE FOUNDATION team for welcoming Jo! Looking forward to what’s next on this exciting journey of disruptive futures! 🌠 #DubaiFutureFoundation #FEELProgram #DisruptiveFutures #CitiesResearchInstitute #Collaboration #FuturesThinking #CraftingFutures
💫 And so it begins! 🎍On my last big adventure I embraced the ancient craft of Japanese bamboo weaving—a practice and culture that forever changed my life. The vital interplay between the past and the present is not lost on me. Especially, because this time, I’m stepping into the future… a place where I feel equally at home. 📝 So, here’s the wrap on the first day of the DUBAI FUTURE FOUNDATION, FEEL | A Disruptive Futures Program. What an incredible start! We were warmly welcomed by His Excellency Omar Sultan AlOlama, Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications and Dr Mohamed Qasem, Dean of the Dubai Future Academy. 📦 Led by Yvonne Gregori and her team, our first task was to crack a Break the Box game, reminding us all that “we’re better together” #thefutureiscollaborative 🤓 The afternoon session was tactile and material (totally my thing), as Dr Antony Rowstron Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft Research, Cambridge, presented the power and purpose behind Silica glass data storage. The takeaway? Heat, humidity, and capacity are no longer an issue—plus spider bot archivists are totally lovable! 💛 This comprehensive program wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of Dr Mohamed Qasem, Tala Anshasi, Farah AlHattab, and Shamma AlMurid. The bar is high for the days to come, and I’m eager to see what’s next! 💡As Christina Figueres and Tom Robert-Carnac suggest “we are the future we choose”. What do you choose? 🙏 Huge thanks to Cities Research Institute, Cara Beal, Bronwyn Harch (FTSE, FQA), and Griffith University for supporting my attendance. #DubaiFutureFoundation #FEELProgram #DisruptiveFutures #Collaboration #FuturesThinking #inspired #craftingfutures
