About us

The City of Burnside acknowledges that the City is located on the traditional land of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We respect their spiritual relationship with this land. We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of this land. Established in 1856, the City of Burnside is one of Adelaide's oldest residential areas, and is well known for its tree lined streets, period architecture and plentiful reserves and gardens within our 30 km² area. Recreational spaces, such as Hazelwood Park, and our tidy, safe, and clean streetscapes, contribute to our City’s character and amenity. While the City of Burnside is conscious of respecting the City’s past, it also looks to the future with sound civic management and supporting innovation and creativity to achieve healthy lifestyles, community well-being and prosperous local business precincts.

  • On Saturday morning, 14 December, we held a special ceremony to mark the centenary of the Burnside District Fallen Soldiers' Memorial statue. This memorial was opened on 14 December 1924 by Governor Lieutenant General Sir Tom Bridges, commemorating local servicemen who gave their lives in World War I. In addition to the Helping Hand statue sculpted by Charles Web Gilbert, this significant site is also home to the Avenues of Honour, with 109 fallen remembered on individual plaques found along Alexandra Avenue and Prescott Terrace. It was our great honour to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC Governor of South Australia and Mr Rod Bunten in attendance, with Her Excellency and Mayor Anne Monceaux unveiling a commemorative plaque that will be installed to mark 100 years of this poignant memorial. Thank you to everyone who attended this very special occasion, with a special mention to the Burnside Military History Research Group who have worked diligently in collaboration with the City of Burnside to ensure the ongoing preservation of this living memorial.

  • We barely have the words to describe how incredible Carols in the Park was on Friday night! We are so grateful to the thousands who came along for what was a beautiful evening of festivities, with an unbelievable array of live performances, lots of fun activities for the kids and so much more! Carols in the Park is our biggest event of the year and our events team work extremely hard to bring it all together, with support from a variety of other departments including our field teams, our comms team and many more. Of course, none of this can happen without our community coming along and being a part of the magic as well! 🙌

We want to give a huge congratulations to Burnside resident Amber Brock-Fabel, who last night was awarded the SA Young Australian of the Year! Amber's amazing achievement comes off the back of her efforts to advocate on behalf of the environment as well as youth and the various contemporary issues they face. In 2021, Amber founded the award-winning South Australian Youth Forum, which continues to be a strong platform for young people to share their thoughts and views with political leaders to influence real change. In 2022, Amber was presented with the City of Burnside's Young Citizen of the Year Award in recognition of her hard work, and we are so proud of her tremendous efforts. Congratulations Amber! We would also like to share our congratulations to Burnside residents Irfan and Sobia Hashmi who received the 2025 Local Heroes for SA award for their incredible work as pharmacists and migrant community leaders over the past two decades, helping to transform rural healthcare.

  • Next month will see the departure of our CEO Chris Cowley, who joined the City of Burnside on 13 January 2020 and has overseen a wide variety of initiatives and projects that have improved the city. In his time at the City of Burnside, Mr Cowley: • Led Council’s response to COVID restrictions that came into effect in March 2020. He ensured that Council continued to deliver services to our community in different ways, in particular services that overcame social isolation for our community throughout the pandemic. • Delivered the first City Master Plan that will shape the future of Burnside. • Improved motorist safety with the introduction of 40 km/h speed limits in sections of the City. • Brought the Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass back onto the state and national agenda. • Has taken a stance on illegal tree removals in the City. • Saw Council awarded Tree City of the World over four years. • Started City of Burnside’s path to reconciliation, instigating our partnership with Traditional Owners to develop a Reconciliation Plan and artwork. • Delivered the redevelopment of Tusmore Wading Pool; the Dulwich Community Centre; construction on the multi award winning Kensington Gardens / Kensington Wama Wetland; the Magill Village Precinct; and The Shed on Conyngham Street. • Initiated Council’s focus on environmental sustainability, achieving our 2030 carbon neutral emissions targets. • Fostered grassroots community lead projects such as the creation of the community garden in Laurel Avenue, Linden Park and the Your Neighbourhood Budget program. • Placed focus on access and inclusion in all Council venues. • Initiated the refurbishment of the 100-year-old state heritage listed Regal Theatre. Thank you Chris for all your efforts and for leading the City of Burnside over the past four years. We wish you all the best in your new role with the Town of Gawler.
