You can’t build houses without housing lots! The serious shortage of skilled drainers and plant operators in residential subdivision construction may not receive as much media attention as bricklayers and carpenters, but addressing civil skills shortages is just as critical for tackling WA’s housing crisis. CCF WA’s advocacy on behalf of our industry has secured the inclusion of drainers and plant operators on the Approved Priority Trades List for Residential Construction, which determines eligibility for the State Government’s GTO Wage Subsidy. Thanks to the support of the Construction Training Fund, $21.9 million was recently allocated for 175 new places in the GTO Wage Subsidy Program. This presents a great opportunity for SME civil contractors active in land development to host a civil construction apprentice at heavily reduced rates. SME contractors working on government projects also qualify.

Last night we hosted one of our most popular events of the year; the annual Women in Civil Sundowner. 140 people joined us to soak up the view from the rooftop at Prince Lane Bar with networking, drinks and nibbles. To quote one of our attendees, it really had a fabulous energy! Thank you to all who attended for supporting the Women in Civil initiative, and of course to our wonderful sponsors: our Women in Civil Partner Kais Hire, and Alcolizer Technology, Assignar and Cbus Super Fund. #WomeninCivil KAIS GROUP

As reported in today’s Courier Mail, it’s refreshing to see the Crisafulli LNP Government condemning the damage the Best Practice Industry Conditions (BPIC) is doing to construction costs and productivity across Queensland. It’s shortsighted to believe that BPIC’s affects are limited solely to BPIC projects when the whole industry is vying for the same pool of labour. CCF QLD has consistently criticised BPIC as bad policy since its inception. This should serve as a clear warning to other state and territory Governments that are considering implementing similar policy. #CCFQLD #CivilConstruction

Tracc Civil wins inaugural Land Development Earth Award 🏆 Tracc Civil’s Watermark Stage 1 Bulk Earthworks and Civil Works project is the recipient of the new WA Earth Award for Land Development projects. WA Earth Awards Chief Judge Peter Rowles said the Watermark project was the strongest of three high-quality land development projects entered by Tracc Civil in the 2024 WA Earth Awards. “It was great to see Tracc put forward three projects this year, as quite often we don’t see any entries from subdivision contractors,” Mr Rowles said. “With this special Earth Award we want to celebrate excellence in land development and challenge the perception that building a subdivision is just routine civil construction. “In many ways, it can be just as, if not more challenging to build a subdivision than a major government road project. Land development contractors need to manage earthworks, drainage, sewer, water, electrical, NBN, gas, pavements, concrete and other structural works as well as environmental, safety, and community engagement – often with minimal resources and sometimes to incomplete designs and very tight schedules and budgets."
